#2Now? Until the 1920s or 1930s, there was very little regulation of drugs. I am old enough to remember when paregoric could be bought in drug stores without a prescription. (For use in stopping or slowing diarrhea.)

Very cool - I'd never heard the term paregoric and I assumed it was perhaps the class of drugs used for slowing diarrhea (like say, Loperamide). I'd never have thought literal tincture of opium would have that use. (Also, now that I've looked it up Loperamide is also an opioid agonist and likely capitalizes on some of the same effects).
