i keep thinking that the job of national public libraries nowaday should include archiving the web. We shouldn't rely on foundations or the goodwill of private companies to save the material future historians will work on.

The forced obsolescence of consoles is amazing. Now the new generation is advertising as one of their major achievements the retro-compatibility with the previous generation games, but what about PS3 or 360 games? Don't worry, you will have the option to pay again for the same game, maybe with new textures (but maybe not). At the same time, on PC I can play almost any game it has existed in PC history.

I know it was a pain to code for initially but once the tooling got better was it really that bad? The Cell still seems like an awesome piece of kit. Had the PS4 been a PS3 with a new GPU and a clocked up Cell with an extra PPE would that have been a bad thing?
Probably, if only because non-exclusive AAA games already cost tens of millions of $$$ to develop, and no other consoles or PC's show any similarity with the Cell architecture. So you would either end up with really crappy PS versions of multi-platform games, or they would not be made for PS at all.

This is underrated. After a 23 day outage I will never, ever, under any circumstances choose a Sony product. They're irredeemable. It astonishes me they were able to continue selling consoles. In the same way that I will never forgive Microsoft for their hostility I will also never forgive Sony for their utter incompetence.
They had a serious security breach and it was pretty bad, for sure, and the service stayed down for a while. But Sony is not the first company to have a security breach. And under the circumstances, they did the right thing: shutting the service down entirely until it could be fixed was clearly the right call, but it was also clearly a very difficult call to make. This is what we want companies to do when things like this happen.
After the incident, they gave every user two AAA games (very good ones too! InFamous and LittleBigPlanet!), and compensation for the downtime (as well as 30 days of PSN free for non-members, even though they weren't really affected), which was pretty darn generous. And there has been no verified reports of fraud resulting from the breach.
I was also annoyed I couldn't play Call of Duty for 3 weeks, but I got over it.

Yes, that means no discless PS5, and getting your games (at least those you want to keep) on disc.
