It's funny - x86 has been the king of computing for basically my entire life, and we're finally seeing that change. This is kind of like a throwback to the early days of innovation in the CPU space, before everything ran on the same ISA. I'm both nervous and excited. Excited because x86 has been stagnant for years . I'm not an EE but my understanding is that its a pretty messy architecture with lots of "glue and duct…

#972Dang, you do a very nice job of moderating here. Light touch approach, helpful guidance and enforcement when needed. Just wanted to let you know it's appreciated!
Mr. Gackle is in large part what has kept HN from degrading into just another Internet forum.

> "no AAA gaming" This is, arguably, a disadvantage of any Mac. But Apple Silicon may actually improve the situation over time, as having the same GPUs and APIs on Macs and iOS devices means there is now a much bigger market for game developers to target with the same codebase.
I agree. It is not without danger, the same as with Apps actually, that developers target only the iPad (touch interface) and don't care about optimizing for the Mac experience. But on the whole I am optimistic.
The only issue might be multi-touch based games on M1

Wouldn't it be easier to just create standard pagination links at the top of the comments page, rather than manually forcing a mod to post this "list of pages" comment on each and every article?

This simply isn't true. I just spun up a new instance on Oracle cloud, and it came with AMD CPUs. If AMD is selling to cloud providers Intel is fucked.
I specifically stated outside HN bubble and AMD is worthless without access to Intel patents.
From what I gather AWS also offers AMD and ARM-based instances.
I don't see how it benefits the cloud providers not to offer these choices. No one benefits from a monopoly and they want to drive the cost of their services down.

To be honest, I think that these comments evidence a failure of the HN website UI. Wouldn't it be easier to just create standard pagination links at the top of the comments page, rather than manually forcing a mod to post this "list of pages" comment on each and every article?

Yes similarly I’ve started to notice that other users never notice I’ve replied to their comments since there are no notifications. A bit sad since sometimes quite a bit of effort is put into the replies.

#979Kind of remarkable for a laptop without a fan. (Infamous fan-hater Steve Jobs would be proud.) Power/thermal management looks very good - low heat and long battery life without sacrificing performance. Presumably the Air will have to throttle performance for some workloads, but not in this benchmark apparently.

"uncertain future of macos as it continues to be locked down" Citation Needed . Apple detractors LOVE to bring this idea up, but there's nothing to it in any real sense. Do Macs ship with a checkbox filled in that limits software vendors? Yes. This is a good thing. Is it trivial to change this setting? Also yes. Anyone who buys a Mac can run any software on it they like. There is no lockdown.
ARM Macs can't run unsigned software.
