Will iTunes disappear in Big Sur - is the alternative equally good? I originally put off installing Catalina because I didn't want to lose iTunes.

It is already gone since Catalina. It was replaces by the Music, Podcast, TV apps. iPhone management happens in finder.

I never installed Catalina on my Desktop Mac because the security processes crossed the line of usability (for me). But Apple's love for deprecation is eventually going to push me to later OS'es -- and those OS'es will be decreasingly interested in performing well on my Intel hardware.

Just want to put here that if you're using a Mac and haven't tried Safari recently, you're missing out. A few things: - Battery life is fantastic compared to Chrome/FF - Privacy seems to be top-notch - The tab ordering situation is now chrome-like (my biggest gripe in older versions of safari) - Experimental features are 1 click away, easily enable/disable WebGL2 - Support for the WebExtensions standard means addons…

For adblocking in Safari, I recommend Wipr. It's not free but it's very unintrusive.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

Ehm, push notifications?

Desktop Safari has had push notifications since like… 10.9 Mavericks. Only mobile Safari doesn't support them.

I thought this too, but it seems Safari only supports the Notifications API for when a site is open, not Web Push for background notifications?

The best thing about this is being able to run natively iOS apps (with new chips). I'll probably never open another Electron app on desktop again. Wonder how the file management works.

Does that mean we can run Slack iOS app on Mac Silicon? That'll be great, if its possible. Slack Electron mac app consumed too much battery.

Yes.

I've been under the assumption that FF with its ABP, uBlock, and Privacy Badger extensions, as well as the included FF tracking protections were the toughest you can get. Is Safari is up to that level now?

> “Big Sur has been engineered, down to its core, to take full advantage of all the power of the M1 chip” Does that mean that all of the OS code has been recompiled for Apple Silicon / ARM? And if so, does that mean Big Sur has two binaries: 1 for ARM (new M1 Macs) and 1 for Intel (existing supported Mac devices) and there is a flag at boot-time to determine which mode it runs in?

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but why would there be a boot time flag instead of just having two versions, seeing as a particular CPU could only run one version?

I don't know if it's still the case, and probably won't if you switch architectures, but it used to be possible to move the system disk to another computer (or make a copy) and it worked.

Does it still have adblocking limitations? The same that Chrome wanted to implement?

Yes, there's a few features of WebExtensions that Safari chose not to implement. I'm having a hard time finding the article and discussion about this. The missing features prevent ad blockers like uBlock Origin from working.
