Like the grandparent comment, I would avoid this M1 Macbook since the developer ecosystem is still unsupported by it. Take this for example: https://github.com/docker/for-mac/issues/4733 Docker still doesn't run on Apple Silicon Macs, so the migration path is already disrupted here.

Not everyone needs to run Docker.

This really flips the argument that Mac hardware is overpriced and underpowered on its head. Now Apple computers are a premium product from a performance perspective, as well.

This is salient, and almost upsetting frankly as I (and others?) have been looking for a 'way off' the platform after years of grievance. This is might just be good enough to keep their core platform value in place. It's a shrewd move in their part, it's been a while since we've seen this level of core innovation on their non-iOS offers.

same feeling here. It seems that we'll soon have to choose between freedom on one side vs performance ( inaddition to good UX, which is today's tradeoff).

i was hoping for a good ios opensource replacement, i guess now i'll soon have to wait for a good laptop competitor as well.

I feel like i'm stuck in a jail made out of gold.

They have 5nm chips because they essentially outbid everyone else from doing so at this time and bought all of the production capacity from TSMC for themselves.

They could do that because they've been selling overpriced products.

Geekbench is designed to test CPU's in short bursts to not get them into thermal throttling (this is by design, it is supposed to be CPU test, not cooling test), so I would be wary of Air's results - at least until other benchmarks results are available. MacBook Pro's results on the other hand should be more representative as it has active cooling and can sustain heavy load for longer.

GB5 scores for the M1 Mini and M1 MBP are linked in TFA.

GB5 scores are not comparable across different CPU arch. The scale is different.

Looking at Geekbench charts, I see that my Samsung phone has a faster processor than my $3000 gaming rig, and it sure as hell draws less power ... so why aren't datacenters just use phones instead of Xeon and Epyc servers, what am I missing?

Because geekbench results are not comparable across the platforms/OS. The scale is not consistent.

ARM is the future, at least in laptops. Apple lead the fray again, it's incredible.

Apple is hardly the first laptop manufacturer that built a arm based laptop. Microsoft did it before them with the Surface back in 2012. However it's not going to be as popular as Apple's laptop. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_RT

Apple is rarely "first" with anything (they were nowhere near the first with mp3 players, for example). But they are often first-in-class once they commit to an idea. And then we got the iPod after many other companies tried to also do that in the preceding years. ARM is not new, but Apple committing to this is going to be very disruptive, and ultimately a more impressive implementation, in ways the Surface never was.

How long does Geekbench take to run? Long enough to reach thermal equilibrium?

Geekbench is designed to measure CPU burst speeds, not to measure cooling systems. By design it does not run long enough to test the thermal situation.
