It also needs a proper application for marketing. Something “previously not possible on a portable” specific to Apple’s other strengths.

Portable? I guess they will put something 'bigger' than M1 in the new 16" MBP, but what I'm really interested in is what they put into the new iMac Pro and eventually Mac Pro.

Like the grandparent comment, I would avoid this M1 Macbook since the developer ecosystem is still unsupported by it. Take this for example: https://github.com/docker/for-mac/issues/4733 Docker still doesn't run on Apple Silicon Macs, so the migration path is already disrupted here.

You say “still” as if Apple silicon Macs are more than a day old.

Hang on, you're swapping a AS MBP for an AS MBA because you think the fan noise will be an issue with the MBP? If anything, it's a bonus to have the fan so your can have prolonged boost performance while the MBA chip will throttle under continuous load.

Any MBP with Fantel chips (brand new, no dust) is so quick to just gun it with the fan noise - slack, chrome, electron apps, second monitor. I think the fan noise you experience is not Apple's fault, but Intel's fault.

I’ll take a stab at the problem: an “actual professional” in this context is someone who makes their money by using the computer.

See, I think that is very far from the definition a lot of others have in mind. By your definition, probably 95% of professionals don't need any more power than a macbook air.

I don’t see Apple going further on this front than what they’ve already done.

They don’t want to discourage developers from using their machines because guess who works on MacOS? Developers using Macs.

No, they aren't. All of the top results have crazy overclocking and liquid cooling. You need to look the numbers here: https://browser.geekbench.com/processor-benchmarks. Top end Zen 3 is slightly lower than M1.

The M1 is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s an MVP desktop arm chip. M2, M3... that is when I think we will see stellar performance against things like Ryzen.

That’s my guess. I’m a Mac house but I have two gaming machines arriving Friday for some rendering projects. I really wanted to wait to see what Apple released, but I figure two things: I’m not traveling much in the next year, so I’ll have a desktop year, 2) not a good idea to get v1 of new Apple things. I hope they’ll have new 2nd gen things in the market next year and I’ll come back.

Apple often has 2-3 future generations in development. This was just the first complete design they turned into a product.

That RAM design, tho...
