OK... but let's say it's 95% there, even. How much power does an M1 draw compared to a 5950X? It's not even funny. And the M1 is running at a lower clock.

We don't know what the M1 draws at load because Apple won't say.

It's almost certainly better per watt, which I'd expect because the 5950X (and the 6-core 65W TDP 5600X, which also tops the MBA multi-core Geekbench result) are still desktop processors.

Yeah, the Mac Pro supports up to 1.5TB of DRAM (vs. 16GB), it's got a bunch of slots and discrete GPUs, and it can run Windows and Windows VMs. I hope it doesn't end up as an orphan system like the 2013 "trash can" Mac Pro, which was an interesting system that got zero upgrades. I'm curious for Windows users what can we hope for from Arm/AMD? It's kind of depressing seeing how well Apple and their ecosystem is coming along. Being able to run apps natively on your laptop sounds amazing. Android and Windows are far away from that level of cohesion. There's Phone Link, but running apps using that is clunky and slow.

I think there is also a moral angle that disturbs Windows fans to this as well: This is validation that Apple's heavy-handed walled-garden approach can, in fact, work and even sometimes beat an open ecosystem. That's freaky.

Not really. Apple is one of the few companies that invests in this kind of cohesive experience. It didn’t come out of the blue. Doubt Windows does much in this regard given their atrocious UX

5950X is 105W desktop CPU. Apple M1 is for laptops and Mac Mini.

Plus, 5950X costs 799$ for the chip alone. (cooler no included)

That does include practically every white collar occupation at this point.

I’d extend it to mean someone for whom the non-pro model is less sufficient (for example, they are using dev tools or video editing as opposed to Excel, Word and email).

You’re kidding me. Are you seriously happy with the level of innovation coming out of x86? It’s a decades old pile of glue and skeletons. Intel has all but given up. AMD is out innovating Intel but at the end of the day the platform as a whole is aging and comes with a lot of baggage, spectre/meltdown, etc...

You can certainly choose to view this as a step towards bolstering the walled garden... but my money is on Apple wanting to innovate and knowing that they can. Vertical integration does a lot for efficiency, cost, etc... as well and not just keeping people in your walled garden.

People forget: Apple has been shipping their own silicon for years. If you had stellar cpus you could make in house, wouldn’t you rather use them instead?

You can buy it in a Mac Mini, and an iMac eventually no doubt. The "laptop"/"desktop"-grade chip distinction is pretty arbitrary here.

Can somebody explain how is M1 going to work on larger GPU tasks (rendering, encoding etc) with it's memory bandwidth M1 total memory bandwidth is 68.2 GB/s (128 bit LPDDR4x-4267) AMD Radeon Pro 5600m memory bandwidth is 394.2 GB/s (2048 bit HBM2) https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-pro-5600m.c3612

You can buy an entire M1-based Mac Mini for the price of the 5600M upgrade cost over a base MacBook Pro (5600M is a $700 upgrade over base configuration).

It's an apples and oranges comparison. The M1 GPU is an integrated solution targeted at the cheapest Macs. The 5600M is external GPU targeted at $4000+ top of the line Macs.

There's no reason that higher end Apple silicon machines can't also use external GPUs like the 5600M (after development, of course).

Single core performance usually isn't much different between laptop and desktop CPUs.
