This really flips the argument that Mac hardware is overpriced and underpowered on its head. Now Apple computers are a premium product from a performance perspective, as well.

So performant premium that I’m thinking of calling Apple about my MBP preorder and switching it to the Air.

Last thing I need is a MacBook Air equivalent with an unnecessarily loud and annoying fan.

This is pretty crazy to see, even if the full story isn't clear yet. A base level MacBook Air is taking the crown of the best MacBook Pro. Wow. SVP Johny Srouji and all of the Apple hardware + silicon team have been smashing it for the past many years. For what it's worth, I have a fully specced out 16 inch MacBook Pro with the AMD Radeon Pro 5600m and even with that I'm regularly hitting 100% usage of the card, and…

It's not just outperforming the MacBook Pro. It's also blowing away the current 2020 top-end iMac, which has a 10-core Intel i9. And it's doing this while using more than an order of magnitude less power (10W vs. a TDP of 125W for that Intel part). That's stunning.

That's the wrong conclusion to make. For instance, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14s (with a Ryzen 4800u) with a 15W TDP posts the same Geekbench multicore scores [1] as the M1 Macbook. But the ThinkBook isn't in any way faster than the top-end iMac for real world compute intensive tasks.

The M1 certainly looks efficient, but there's little you can conclude from a single benchmark running for a very short period of time.

I'm curious for Windows users what can we hope for from Arm/AMD? It's kind of depressing seeing how well Apple and their ecosystem is coming along. Being able to run apps natively on your laptop sounds amazing. Android and Windows are far away from that level of cohesion. There's Phone Link, but running apps using that is clunky and slow.

I think there is also a moral angle that disturbs Windows fans to this as well: This is validation that Apple's heavy-handed walled-garden approach can, in fact, work and even sometimes beat an open ecosystem. That's freaky.

AMD's Zen 3 (Ryzen 5xxx series) are beating the Apple M1 in single core score: https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/singlecore

As another datapoint Ian (of Anandtech) estimated that the M1 would need to be clocked at 3.25Ghz to match Zen 3, and these systems are showing a 3.2Ghz clock: https://twitter.com/IanCutress/status/1326516048309460992

I’ve always used 15” MBPs without external displays as my only computer for years. I like being mobile and don’t particularly like having a desktop + laptop. Since COVID I’ve been stuck at home so I decided to finally get an external monitor. The problem is that you can’t use the 16” with an external display and the lid open without the fans spinning at full speed. Some people don’t mind it but it drives me crazy. No…

sudo htop See what’s going on. Os-query was going bonkers on me.

It's not a process thing. The left-side TB3 controller freaks out under sustained load and can drive the system to a crawl. We have to unplug one of our LG 4/5Ks and run the other+power on the right when we want to be able to do back to back video conferencing.

It's been a running joke in corporate for years that Apple's "premium fan noise" is a brilliant branding move because you can identify the Mac users as soon as they unmute.

OK... but let's say it's 95% there, even. How much power does an M1 draw compared to a 5950X? It's not even funny. And the M1 is running at a lower clock.

The bigger question is, will Windows also shift to ARM now that raw machine performance is miles behind Mac on similar pricing/weight/battery/loudness. Last time I read, Windows ARM version isn't ready for everyone yet not to mention there's no transition kit at all for everyone to move. Why would anyone use Windows anymore unless your infra site needs IE?

Windows has tons of stuffs Macs don't have. Unless you are speaking about development machines.

This idea of “actual professionals” that always comes up in response to apple’s “Pro” moniker amuses me to no end. Everybody throws the term around and no two people have the same definition! What in the world is an actual professional? There are professional journalists that just need a browser and text editor. There are professional programmers working on huge code bases in compiled languages that do need a beefy m…

YouTube has grown by triple digits. Those video “content creators”, from those just messing around to the professional film makers, are a huge opportunity for Apple to secure mind share in. Billions of views on YouTube. Billions of videos too.

I suspect the M1 powered Macs will be hugely successful and very useful for multiple types of users.

Does it? The article is comparing Apple products, instead of comparing an Apple product to an equivalent performer from a competitor.

It's not really Apples to Apples (even if it is in name), so to speak.

It’s also outperforming the 5950X in single core. Incredible!

Yeah, and doing this without a fan . It's almost like Apple is rubbing Intel's face in it for sport. It's not even fair.

But did the test run long enough to need the fan, and what was the ambient temperature?

The fanless Intel Core-M CPUs could post excellent benchmark scores (for its time). But if you give it a lengthy compile task, it'll slow down dramatically.
