The YouTube suggestion algorithm is the problem! Create a new account, watch any political video, and then click through the suggestions. Keep clicking through the suggestions and in hour you will be on some extremist nonsense. YouTube is the source of this problem, and their solution is censorship? It's ridiculous. Show people the videos they have subscribed or searched for, and that's it. The majority of people don…

You don't even have to watch a political video. I have crap popping up all the time, "Watch this professor get destroyed by !"

I know youtube is a shithole and yet it still surprises me. My son's favorite kid's show is only on YouTube so I created a new account, subscribed just to their channel and still inappropriate content shows up. How hard is this?

I also can't block it for my daughter because she has school assignments that involve watching YouTube videos. Sooner or later that's going to bite the school in the ass.

I just mean that they should have their work peer reviewed first.

How are they going to get the research done if they can't present the hypothesis and supporting observations? How will they get the results peer reviewed if they can't present them because they're not peer-reviewed yet?

Researchers typically present findings in journals (or conferences in computer science). These YouTube videos aren’t research, they’re some mix of unscrupulous money grab and deliberate misinformation from Republican-affiliated groups trying to mitigate the political damage of the administrations abdication of responsibility for stopping the pandemic.

BREAKING NEWS: trident1000 is a child molester; found with 6000 indecent images of children on his PC. For the record this is intended in jest

The legal system provides the mechanism to address that specific category of speech. “Defamation is an area of law that provides a civil remedy when someone's words end up causing harm to your reputation or your livelihood. Libel is a written or published defamatory statement, while slander is defamation that is spoken by the defendant.”

I know it does. It was a response to this:

> There is no such thing as almost free speech in a free society except perhaps for clear cut physical threats.

I'll preface this by stating that I hate the idea of censorship and I always have. However, were I to happen across someone motionless on the floor with a needle in their arm, I would give them NARCAN instead of a ride to a rehab center. I'm from the United States. Social media is currently poisoning our country to a degree that I think it may be too late to try and draw out the fight for free speech by using free sp…

FWIW I think there is a major breakdown of The West underway that begun when China effectively ripped Western ideology apart after the end of the cold war. The Western ideology after WW2 was that liberal markets (eventually) implied (rise of) a democracy with civil liberties. China showed that this ideology is false by creating liberal-enough markets while retaining absolute state control (and the Chinese state has v…

Essentially, the international scope of the communications tools online has allowed for free-speech absolutism to be hacked by the propaganda methods refined via the Cold War.

the NYT isn't highly likely to publish things that source to Russian propaganda ops, because they employ fact-checkers, care about pedigree of information, and change their editorial process in light of system failures. They get tripped from time-to-time, but the same trick doesn't usually work twice.

My relatives on Facebook? Not so much. Nor did Facebook (until recently) care to put an editorial eye to advertising as long as the money was green.

It is not a guarantee that a system structured like this is healthy for democracy, nor is it a guarantee that a democracy doesn't destabilize under it.

The problem with “hate speech” is that increasingly more things are being added to that umbrella. It’s kind of similar to the way that “think of the children” is often abused to cover all sorts of things.

Could you indicate some cases where the precedence of hate speech law has been expanded? Thank you!

A hate crime is defined as 'Any criminal offence which is perceived by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility....

A hate incident is any incident which the victim, or anyone else, thinks is based on someone’s prejudice towards them because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, disability or because they are transgender.

Evidence of the hate element is not a requirement. You do not need to personally perceive the incident to be hate related. It would be enough if another person, a witness or even a police officer thought that the incident was hate related.

Some truly terrifying sentences in there. All based on the perception of someone else.

I know you were just joking but I wanted to take it as an opportunity to expand my point. And for record I only have 3k.

This would be great in a universe where it was possible to know the truth with absolute certainty. Scientists disagree about this stuff, so how is YouTube in a position to determine what's misinformation and what isn't? Why is censorship suddenly so in vogue now?

The article mentions specifically conspiracy theories saying covid vaccines will kill you or be used to implant tracking microchips. I don't think it takes a scientist to call that misinformation.

Don't jump to conclusions, please. Because you seem to assume the WHO didn't change their minds based in research but on public opinion. And that they would "censor" any other information. No proof for either. Also, only governments can censor. Youtube is a private entity, so whatever they do cannot be censorship yo begin with.

Wikipedia disagrees with your definition of Censorship: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship "Censorship can be conducted by governments, private institutions, and other controlling bodies."

Censorship =|= free speech. Free speech is a right guaranteed by the state, what Youtube is doing is more resembling a news paper refusing to pick publish certain readers letters. Freedom of speech is not supposed to guarantee you the maximum possible reach or to protect you from the consequences of ehat you said, social and professional.

I remember the day I learned that Youtube comes preinstalled on iOS devices -- because the Youtube app somehow (despite never being used, let alone being logged into Google) managed to put a push notification on my home screen -- a push notification for a new upload from a fringe alt-right channel with just a few thousand views. Naturally, every single recommended video on that video was alt-right and far right wing…

Youtube hasn't come preinstalled on iOS for like 8 years (removed in iOS 6).. so I really have no idea what you're getting at.
