I am not in favor or against Fauci or his comments (I am not even american), and I am not a linguist either so perhaps you can help me: Is "not recommended" == "discouraged"? "He also acknowledged that masks were initially not recommended to the general public so that first responders wouldn’t feel the strain of a shortage of PPE." As far as I understand, 'discouraging' is to saying publicly "Do not buy masks" and 'n…

He actively discouraged mask use. Fauci and the Surgeon General said wearing a mask was more likely to get you sick because you would touch your face more. "You can increase your risk of getting it by wearing a mask if you are not a health care provider," Adams said. "Folks who don't know how to wear them properly tend to touch their faces a lot and actually can increase the spread of coronavirus," he added. https://…

Thanks. I don't know the whole story, but I cannot find Fauci's name (ctrl + F) in the last article you linked. It mentions a Surgeon and a Vice President.

Surgeon General Jerome Adams and Vice President Mike Pence have urged people against buying and wearing masks.

I'll preface this by stating that I hate the idea of censorship and I always have. However, were I to happen across someone motionless on the floor with a needle in their arm, I would give them NARCAN instead of a ride to a rehab center. I'm from the United States. Social media is currently poisoning our country to a degree that I think it may be too late to try and draw out the fight for free speech by using free sp…

Democracy functions with an educated electorate. If you're saying that YouTube has to act as gatekeeper ban non-libellous, legal misinformation, you're passing a grim judgment on your fellow citizens which implies that the battle for the country is already lost.

Our fellow citizens elected a reality TV star as president of a country with nuclear weapons.

People are passing judgment for, I think, fully rational reasons.

The Atlantic has had several good articles on how fundamental societal trust is dissociating in America. The election of Trump isn't the only aspect of it, but it did scare about half the country into thinking the other half isn't rational in the same way they are. And the feeling is mutual.

>> Censorship and other forms of regulating free speech is simply never a good solution. This is of course false. We have hate speech laws for example.

and since we don't use anything resembling the scientific method with our laws there's no way of knowing if hate speech laws are effective. Being a law doesn't make it good. e.g. war on drugs

One nice feature on many social media platforms is that one can unfollow or block people who seem to generate more heat than light in their posts. I am willing to read and interact with someone with whom I disagree as long as the discussion remains civil and productive. Trolls have been around from the early days of the internet. I remember one student from Dartmouth that posted on many of the science newsgroups unde…

But you're counting on your intelligence to act as a filter. It has become very clear in the last many years that a non-insignificant percentage of the populace doesn't possess the knowledge or level of rational thought to properly evaluate what they are being fed en-mass. It's increasingly easy to exploit some people's herd mentality and lack of education to rise movements that can have significant impact. I often talk to people who suddenly spout off some random conspiracy theory because they read about it 10 times on Facebook and they lack the ability to evaluate it properly. I wholly agree that I'm not a fan of censorship but likewise I don't think private platforms have a responsibility to equally showcase what is known to be false.

It's all going to be a mess no matter how you handle it... but permitting an endemic lack of education over the last generation has brought the concept of democracy to this point. I wish there was a clearer solution.

No. Determining truth is a hard problem, and trusting huge corporations to arbitrate truth for us is extremely dangerous to our democracy[0].

The way to preserve free speech (really "free promotion" or "free publishing" in this case, as there are other avenues for these videos) is exactly what you say — consequences. Newspapers have free speech, but are subject to libel laws, for instance.

There's no real mechanism to hold YouTube to account for promoting and spreading this stuff, and they are naturally incentivised for that mechanism never to come about. To try and ensure it never does, they're obviously settling for this.

Want "free speech" back? Give it meaningful consequences.

> Perpetrators of lies will even hide behind this, and create a false image of rebellious heroism, instead of facing public discourse and the consequences thereof. Unfortunately, I think it's a bit of a classical liberal ideal that "the truth will come through and those who were wrong will see the error of their ways". To some, the truth is a tool. If it's not a useful tool, it will be discarded. Probably a more usef…

This ideal served us pretty well in the last century. Trust in objectivity grew in proportion to our investment in free speech and liberalism. Incidentally, we see a breakdown in this trust at the very moment that society is becoming more illiberal (Trumpism on the right and woke progressivism on the left). Correlation isn’t causation, but this seems to be as strong a causative signal as we get for these kinds of abstract social problems.

What are you talking about?! Don’t blame social media, the biggest and loudest source of COVID-related misinformation have been institutions like the WHO. There is very little science (we don’t yet have enough data, and not enough time has passed), so all we have to go on is “broscience” (smartly connecting anecdotal facts and whatever little data we have, and drawing sensible conclusions). By designating one opinion…

The WHO, and all other western CDC-like orgs, made one mistake regarding masks early on during the pandemic. One. A mistake they corrected since. And because of that, you and other see them as totally discredited. On the other hand, the "alternative" sources suggest bleach, un-proofed and not working medication, global conspiracies involving chips and 5G and what not. Seriously, get a grip.

> the "alternative" sources suggest bleach, un-proofed and not working medication, global conspiracies involving chips and 5G and what not.

There’s a lot of alternative sources, including actual doctors, you don’t get to pick out only the lunatics to strenthen your point.

The real problem is that people are looking for solid medical advice on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. No amount of censorship is going to change that.

> The real problem is that people are looking for solid medical advice on YouTube

The thing is... solid medical advice does exist on YouTube, so it's not entirely unreasonable to go looking for it there!

"Just go to your doctor"

Yes well, a) that's not free in America while YouTube is, and b) your local doctor could have been bottom of his class, you have no way of knowing. It's like saying don't watch world class programmers on youtube, hire a local programmer instead.
