Scientific consensus isn't a factor in the scientific strength of a theory. But I'm not denying that there is such a thing as a scientific consensus.

That is true, but it increases the probability of a theory being valid. The exception to that are most notable, but I think it is nevertheless the rule.

The exceptions to that are not notable, they're commonplace and spread across every discipline. They are littered through all of modern history.

Thinking we've cracked the code of rational thought and avoiding groupthink is silly.

One nice feature on many social media platforms is that one can unfollow or block people who seem to generate more heat than light in their posts. I am willing to read and interact with someone with whom I disagree as long as the discussion remains civil and productive.

Trolls have been around from the early days of the internet. I remember one student from Dartmouth that posted on many of the science newsgroups under the name Archimedes Plutonium. He continually posted that the Plutonium atom was God. This started many unproductive discussions and spammed many newsgroups. I'm sure you can imagine the flame wars... I am thankful that current social media lets me block/ignore trolls.

I'll preface this by stating that I hate the idea of censorship and I always have. However, were I to happen across someone motionless on the floor with a needle in their arm, I would give them NARCAN instead of a ride to a rehab center. I'm from the United States. Social media is currently poisoning our country to a degree that I think it may be too late to try and draw out the fight for free speech by using free sp…

This is a great example of how rights aren't free, they are counterbalanced by responsibilities.

The right to freedom of speech seems to bear the cost of education. An educated person should be able to assess the things they hear and make their own choice on what to believe, uneducated people seem unable to do the same.

Why do you want to curb the infection rate? What’s the end goal? I’m strongly on the Swedish/Trump side here. We know that the virus is practically harmless for youth and young adults. If immunity persists, we should let them get infected ASAP while protecting the old/vulnerable. If immunity fades, then waiting for the vaccine is pointless anyways. As a young person, I won’t be taking the vaccine anytime soon anyways…

How do we know it's harmless for youth and young adults? You know what you've seen. Again, this is a novel virus. It's new. It could be setting up shop in your brain, heart, kidney, liver, semen -- wherever. It could be invisibly weakening your lungs just enough that a flu can come through and kill you. I would suggest a deep dive on mercury poisoning, radiation poisoning, lead poisoning, asbestos, and whatever other…

Well we won’t know what it’s long term effects are for the next 70 years... hell we’re even now figuring out that Herpes virus might have something to do with dementia...

And say we get a vaccine next year. Don’t you worry that if we relax lockdowns, we’re just gonna trigger the next devastating virus?

Let’s face it, life is a risk, and we accept a certain amount of elevated risk in exchange for comfort/utility (e.g. unprotected sex, industry-produced food, driving). This virus seems in line (at least for young adults). So the only real risk here, is government repression.

This is of course false. We have hate speech laws for example.

You raise a good point. Is the problem "social media", or is it simply democratized publishing? Would a "fediverse" of distributed blogs really be more resistant to misinformation, or would it just be harder to censor? Is this simply a problem inherent to the internet?

The fediverse would be better because it wouldn't have an algorithm choosing things to show you based on what keeps you engaged.

Why not? In the era of the attention economy, an algorithm generating engagement keeps people more engaged.

I think it's naive to assume that a fediverse wouldn't eventually include somebody developing such an algorithm that becomes popular among the average user base.

> Censorship and other forms of regulating free speech is simply never a good solution. The almost free speech on the other side of the ocean seems to be working pretty well. You get to say anything that isn’t actively harmful to others, but you won’t be able to advertise bleach as a way to get Corona out of your system.

Nonsense. Almost free speech is censorship by another name.

Working "pretty well?" Sure, unless one tries to talk about things that really matter and strays outside the dotted lines of permissibility.

Some topics are verboten.

When you say "other side of the ocean," I assume you're talking about Europe.

Try to discuss the muslim rape gangs in the UK.

Try to discuss the surge in grenade attacks and many-fold increase in rape in Sweden.

Try to discuss the homeless migrants living on the streets and the Aljerian street wars in France.

Try to discuss Fulan Gong in China. Or tiannamen square.

Try to discuss political assassinations in Russia, or the bribes the wife of Moscow's mayor hands out.

Try to discuss alternative political parties in Ukraine.

I think there are scores of political prisoners serving time for wrongthink who might disagree with your assertion that almost free speech is working pretty well.

If you want to discover who your masters are, learn who you are not allowed to criticize.

> almost free

The land of the almost free just doesn’t have quite the same ring to it
