I am so tired of this fetishisation of the easy way. It is something only available to the privileged and is, in this case, nothing short of abandoning the rest of us to the fascist takeover occurring in the USA.

I think this is a pretty well balanced article. There are a lot of problems in the USA but there are problems elsewhere. People are allowed to make the choice to move, and probably right now a lot of people in the USA are considering just that.

I've lived in several cities in my lifetime and two countries. I definitely feel like each place has different forms of stress. Things that you can't get around that swallow up your energy. But they also have certain charms that nowhere else has as well. This article captures that nicely.

How is abandoning your life and home the "easy" way? Sure, it takes means but it's nontrivial. And yes, many are left behind but should we all be forced to stay on a sinking ship, when there are lifeboats? If anyone must perish, we all must perish? I'm headed toward the exit with my family. It's a long process and if I didn't have a kid, I probably wouldn't be doing it. My kid's life is more important than mine and I'll leave everyone behind for them. It's not easy but it's important.

It absolutely is easy compared to staying and fighting for a better future. Also if you think there's anywhere you can run where things like the fascist tide, globalization, and white supremacy cant reach you you're extremely naive. It would be far better for your child to grow up in a better world, and know how to fight for that, than to grow up on some shrinking islet of comfort without learning anything from their parents except how to run. Good things don't just spring up out of nowhere, they're built and fought for.

Furthermore, the people of comfort in the US (read: the people who have the means necessary to leave) are largely the same people who have benefited from this extremely racist/violent system. That is almost true by definition... For those they very people who are most comfortable because of the exploitation in this country to deem it 'too uncomfortable' and leave is just incredibly gross. It has been far less comfortable for the people being oppressed, who could never dream of having the means to move, than it has been for you forever.

I struggle with this.

Without the US engaged in intl cooporation, then it's even more guaranteed that climate change and ecological collapse will crush us all.

I do consider finding a better place for my family but the safety may be short lived.
