Great movie that I agree with 1000% . I suggest Lost Connections and 10 Arguments for deleting your social media ( mentioned in the movie) as well. I stopped using all social media as of last year and the results have been amazing. I'm more at peace , I no longer getting into stupid Facebook arguments. Online you aren't interacting with whole people, so being absurdly mean is easy. Most people online are just their f…

> I stopped using all social media as of last year You're posting this comment on social media. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_media > I'm more at peace , I no longer getting into stupid Facebook arguments. Online you aren't interacting with whole people, so being absurdly mean is easy. What makes HN different?

It's ridiculous to compare hacker news to Facebook or any other social network mentioned in the documentary.

> "Changes to your behavior and actions..." Isn't this the definition (or goal) of all advertising? I don't see the connection to the first half of the statement tying it to free products and services. There are plenty of paid services that are riddled with ads as well. Movies, Cable TV, airline flights, etc. The fact is that people and organizations are _constantly_ trying to influence your behavior. It's not obviou…

I believe the extra step of social media is that they are not satisfied by changing your behavior from not buying a product to buying a product. They also change your behavior in somewhat indirect ways with the goal that you continue to engage with their platform more and more and be subject to more advertising on the future. So they make you more fanatic or more extremist or more polarized, because it will lead you…

It's also blurring the line. Ads were clearly ads, now you can't really tell where or when you're tracked.

As my ex-colleague says "Any advertisement is propaganda".

I believe in most Latin languages there isn't a separate word. At least in Portuguese and Spanish, both advertisement and propaganda are simply "propaganda".

Not true. In spanish, "ad" is usually anuncio, or sometimes comercial or publicidad. Propaganda can also be used, but is less common than those i think, I've never heard it used.

I once read an original edition of Bernays' Propaganda (1928) with its title in a jaunty typeface on the cover, before the word had a negative connotation.

> But this also makes them the most effective people to talk about it. Nope nope nope. While tech people might have some insight into how some of the tech works, they're still lost in how to both define the problem [1] and describe how these technologies may shape society [2]. Nothing in their professional or personal experience has adequately prepared them to answer these questions. The thing tech people can do now…

Do you have some recommended reading? I enjoyed reading Neil Postman’s Technopoly, but any contemporaries you find particularly insightful?

Here's a good reading list: https://medium.com/tow-center/constructive-technology-critic...

One thing suggested in the movie is to consume a wide variety of media. Coincidentally, I've been doing exactly this for a few months. I started reading both vice and breitbart and their comment sections. And it gave me a way more nuanced perspective than staying inside my filter bubble / echo room.

I got half way through this... possibly less. Its really a shocking thing to see that people dont know for themselves someone in tech they can trust and chat to about the actual problem. Actually a group of people. I consider it more the social experiment. The show is great for getting people to consider but also reconsider. Time to get back into it I suppose!

I understand the experiment, but reading the comments on Vice and Breitbart is really not a good way I would pick to spend my time. They’re both quite bad examples of toxic commenters communities, regardless of the political orientation.

Social Media platforms are like being famous without any of the good parts. You just get all the shitty parts of living your life with 1000 fake friends(I mean fans) like a hero complex, or an influence complex, or hyper sensitivity to judgement, or addiction to others opinions, or addiction, or suicide, or an inability to communicate with people different than you, or an inability to determine fact from scam, or a p…

Or you just look at cool pictures every once in a while.

This actually enforces the point of the movie. We don’t live in a world that can break free of these atrocities.

? The point of the movie (per the website as well) is literally a call to, “rebuild the system.”

That’s not what it’s about, that’s what they tell you it’s about.
