I attended a talk in the UK at Google Campus in London by Eric Schmidt. At the end of the talk there was some Q&A and one very apparently angry and frustrated member of the audience asked something along the lines of 'Do you think it's fair for Google and other big American Tech firms to keep buying up innovative and valuable British and European companies!?' Eric Schmidt immediately replied 'Well if you don't want u…

100x this! I think it's our fault as Europeans that we don't value and invest in tech enough. Why is it the US's fault that they consider tech to be valuable to their economy and national security and we don't? What's stopping us from doing the same? As long as we'll keep treating tech as some cost center instead of a core business while we keep pumping money to keep afloat 19th century industries who's ships have sa…

> Why is it the US's fault that they consider tech to be valuable to their economy and national security and we don't?

USA has created monstrous monopolies that are very heavily subsidized by the government. Amazon, Apple, etc. do not pay taxes and yet get big sums of money to settle in cities.

That is the money that USA is using to buy European companies. China blocked the USA from buying their tech, and the result is a healthy ever growing tech scene.

I have worked for a couple of European tech companies purchased by USA corporations. First "nothing will change" is the message, two years later the reduction in quality is clear and all the tech is siphoned to the USA side of the business. It makes sense, it is good for the USA.

Europe should follow the Chinese example and ban most of USA tech. No more Facebook radicalizing our citizens, no more Amazon taking over all business without control, ... When TikTok started to grow, the USA banned it. That is the game. Europe should follow, ban Facebook, Twitter, ... let local talent grow. There is much wasted talent in Europe overwhelmed by the current position of USA companies.

"Just don't sell" does not work when your adversary puts all the weight of the state to protect and subsidize their tech industry.

Time to buy RISC-V stock

What RISC-V stock, there is not a "RISC-V company". Which is one of the main points where it makes a difference.

Through you could decide go for SiFive, Inc through I have no idea if they entered or will enter the stock marked.

"However, Hauser fears that CFIUS regulation could be applied more broadly than this. “If the president decides Britain doesn’t deserve to have any more microprocessors, then he can decide that Britain isn’t allowed to use its own microprocessors,” he says, adding that “these decisions should be made in Downing Street, not in the White House”. " Don't worry mr. Hauser. The target of the US cornering of the chip marke…

Which is why I would have thought SoftBank selling ARM to Huawei would be an absolutely perfect strategic move.

It also would be somewhat crazy, tbh.

Hi,

Out of curiosity here: Could you name one/a couple of examples? Not necessarily the ones you worked at, if you are prohibited from disclosing this information.

Email is in my profile, if you do not want to make any public statements.

Cheers!

I am going to talk about one that I have colleagues that worked here in Sweden: Skype

It was a successful startup but $8.5 Billion is a lot of cash.

I heard that developers were not happy with Microsoft way. Promotions/Pay/etc. became a competition between colleagues instead of a collaboration.

Of course in that case my colleague leaved the company, maybe other people really liked it that way and stayed.

But, my personal experience is similar. USA companies want employees competing for recognition instead of collaborating to compete with other companies.

That's a difficult and slippery slope type problem. If the Europeans stop the US from acquiring companies there, the US ends up doing the same to European companies trying to acquire US assets. We let Germany buy one of the most important companies on the planet in Monsanto. I consider Monsanto to be a national security level company, we should have never let it go. Seed & AG tech is critical for the coming century a…

> If the Europeans stop the US from acquiring companies there,

You seem to imply here that the US acquired this company against the will of the seller, which I don't think the parent thread was getting at (nor is true, as far as I know).

Erm, I quite like American tech. Google is an unbelievable resource. Provided for free. You want to ban it? I wonder how much business it drives to British companies. Also I couldn't do my job with out it.

Amazon taking over all our businesses? That's a bold claim, any stats to back that up. A family member of mine runs a business on Amazon. You'd like to kill her business? There is literally no other platform that does something like fba.

Also the reason Amazon and Google are successful here in the UK (and everywhere they are allowed to operate) is because they are way better than the competition.

Yes. That is the point. The need exists. European companies will offer that services creating high quality jobs in Europe and they will follow European cultural norms instead of American ones.

> There is literally no other platform that does something like fba.

That is the monopoly part promoted by the USA and financed with public money. Amazon is a monopoly protected by a friendly but in the end foreign power that has misaligned interests.

I can assure you that if tomorrow Alibaba grew to challenge that number one position, it will be banned from doing business in the USA.

The services are needed, here, in the USA and in China. USA has its own tech companies, China has its own tech companies, Europe has not anything at that level because USA just buys anything Europe creates backed up by USA tax-payers money. That is not fair.

Would be curious on any Brits' opinions on if this (failure to support revolutionary technology) happens more there, and if so then why. Recognize biases of hindsight, but it seems like private equity markets in Britain aren't interested in technology at the requisite scale. There's an incredible historical tradition [1], but the majority tend to be either developed with the help of a (1) few angel investors (and the…

A few observations from person experience of working in small startups, and large companies. Being part of companies that were sold, and being both ends of attempted takeovers, all in comparison to what I've seen in US companies. 1. In terms of sensible investment, what I've seen is that success breeds success - one success creates wealthy individuals with experience that can lead or by part of the next round. 2. UK…

> So what you get is lots of interesting small to medium size companies - often started in concert with the strong UK academic sector, and/or diaspora from previous successes - and very few transitions to global players.

In my view the biggest reason for the difference in success between UK/EU tech companies and US ones is simply the sheer size of the US market. Particularly for the current set of big-tech incumbents which are largely consumer focussed.

The creation EU Single Market (in which ironically the UK played a large part) was an attempt to compete, but while larger and having greater regulatory uniformity in many areas than the US, different EU countries speak different languages and have a less integrated culture than the US. This makes it harder to grow companies to the size they might in the US.

Google does not provide that service for free. Where do you think the $27 billion Google search revenue comes from ? Also you might want to read https://onezero.medium.com/how-to-destroy-surveillance-capit... The reason Amazon an Google are successful is that they are unopposed monopolists that acquire or destroy any business that might pose a risk to them.
