The substantial lack of malware in the Mac world pre-dates the Mac AppStore, and numbers have not changed significantly since the introduction of that and/or Gatekeeper.
Gatekeeper is a commercial boiling-frog lock-in strategy sold as a security feature nobody asked for.

Open-source, as a term, was invented in order to sell what was then called Free Software. It has nothing to do with charity.

There's no way in hell that a casual user like my parents would to be able to figure out which 5 mouse clicks to do (without direct guidance) Even the documentation doesn't tell you to right click.
That's generally a good thing. If they don't know their way around the system then you probably don't want them installing software.
The less agency people have, and the less expertise is teached to them and expected of them, the less capable and the more exploitable they become.

If I look at my parents they are well past the point of developing any expertise. Everything is about protecting them now.

Well the other hypercapitalists sell a product that sucks and sure, it lets you run other stuff, but it absolutely tramples on your privacy and is still, for the most part, worse in all aspects. (and yes the keyboard issues were very close to tipping the scales) I wish the choice was simple, but it isn't.
Does the fact that you think alternatives suck make apple have a monopoly? Sure they have a monopoly on your desires, but that isn't a big enough scale for laws to get involved.
There are alternatives out there. So it becomes really hard to claim anti-trust.

#456I don't understand how any developer can willingly use a Mac these days. When you buy a Mac, you don't own it.
I have a similar idea about services like Amazon Lambda; why would developers build apps tightly integrated with a product that they don't own.
Most millennials these days own nothing because they keep perpetually accepting their position as 'renters' through every decision they make.

You know that you could install on mac anything you wanted before appstore, and they were similarly malware free as now with appstore

They've been making it marginally harder for years and years and have consistantly announced features that tend towards making it more like iOS.
