Have you ever tried convincing a flat-earther with arguments? Do you have time to waste in doing that? Do you think they really believe that or they just take pleasure in being insufferable?

I find it far more insulting, despite being perfectly polite, for people to insist the Earth is flat, than for someone to dismiss them with what is, essentially, an accurate descriptor. I am utterly insulted at the waste of intellectual space and the energy expended in these useless debates when people who lived two thousand years ago had pretty much settled it.
I believe flat earthers are intentionally weaponizing their ignorance as an act of rebellion. So yes in that case it is meant to be insulting, just nit anything to take personal.

#54Whether or not the earth is flat, and a host of other discussions, mostly exist to satisfy people's need for conflict and attention. Ask yourself how many times you have seen someone change their view in these confrontations. Then ask yourself how many times you have seen people admit that they are trolling for the sport of it, or for the attention.
It isn't worth the effort to take part in such discussions. It only legitimizes trolls.

Nobody will listen to you if you call people morons, no matter how dumb they act. If you want to convince people not to believe these conspiracy theories, you need to come across as intelligent. You can call their theories moronic and idiotic (with some proper scientific backup), but when you call people that, you only reduce your credibility.

Very. But people who call them idiots don't want to convince them, they want to ridicule them to signal their own superiority to other people who also know the earth isn't flat. It's like teenagers bullying younger kids to show off. They don't want to teach those younger kids how to do $whatever, they just want to laugh because they're so great in comparison.
If you approach them with empathy instead of insults, you'll usually find them to have specific reasons for their beliefs (a general and deep seated mistrust for "the system" is what I've encountered the most), but aren't actually attached to them that much. It's more of a "fuck you" to everybody who is part of the system that they feel mistreated by, like a rebellious teenager. What might also happen if you approach them with empathy of course, is that people like the person that wrote this article, will make fun of you and call you an idiot for engaging with idiots instead of calling them idiots like you should in his mind.
