This is an example why exiting global cooperation such as the European Union is bad for the economy. Another side effect may be that For example the real estate market in London goes lower due to less foreign professionals competing for housing. Plus the price of vegetable at the supermarket will be higher due to more expensive imports from Holland the gardeners of Europe and Spanish fruits being more expensive. Ther…

Foreign professionals still allowed in (points based system), and the London property market remains a great place to launder money.

You’re right food prices will go up, but house prices won’t come down.

Why would imports of vegetables be more expensive? The EU doesn't have export tariffs.

Bombshell in the context of that website's subject/audience. Not a bombshell to the UK or world generally.

But why is this a bombshell (implying a surprise), rather than the natural, expected consequence of the UK leaving the customs union? I'd imagine continuing the current scheme would add a lot of regulatory and procedural complexity for Amazon, which they are unwilling to handle. Isn't this something that was expected by sellers?

Because those who promoted brexit comprehensively lied to the electorate about the consequences of brexit.

Is it? The denial in Europe is currently that the flooding of the labor market with Eastern European workers has no consequences for the common man. Countries have been sold out to the stock markets for the last two decades. It is refreshing that the UK is the first to recognize this officially.

1) Any analysis that tacitly assumes that the fundamental conflict is between "Europe" and "the common man" should be suspect immediately. It clearly has an agenda. 2) The UK government had at its disposal number of measures that could prevent or mitigate the impact of "Eastern European workers flooding the labor market" on "The Common man" (UK citizen edition thereof, only). Following the accession of Poland and oth…

Opening all borders has an agenda, and people no longer believe the narrative.

But of course anyone questioning the tactics of big corporations is a xenophobic, alt-right adjacent, deplorable person.

Which it could choose to zero rate if it stabilized food prices.

So stupid! The UK voted to keep Europeans from coming over here and taking our jobs and seducing our women with their sophisticated accents. There was nothing about blocking European goods and European fulfilment centres. Boris Johnson even assured us that it was going to be easy to get a "great deal" on free trade. This is not the Brexit we voted for!!

I for one hope that the Apples imported from New Zealand I buy I will get them cheaper. Hopefully we will get more products from around the world at affordable prices. EU economy is inefficient and their products are too expensive. For me it is a good riddance.

They confirmed they wanted Brexit in the last elections. They had no excuses when Boris was elected. If that is what people want, that is what people deserve.

That's more a consequence of our terrible electoral system combined with the most incompetent / most poisonous opposition leader ever.

Lol, people say this but I think he was actual opposition to the Tories. KS will not fight anything the Tories want. It will be disastrous for the working people. Shame Labour have reeled back to the depths of hell with New Labour. All I'm suggesting is that the Centrists need to get a grip. Either be with the right wing bring back the Empire type or move left and join to progress society.
