You can tell someone hasn't watched the Ratchet & Clank demo from the other day[0]. The SSDs in these consoles go far beyond short load times. They can radically change how games are made and designed. [0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsnG-3-r6-Q

Wow, I'm not going to believe that's realtime in my hands. I started the video thinking "whats so special about this", and when they started going interdimensional I realized either this is very cool or just hype.

Insomniac Games is pretty good about wysiwyg

One really good example of an Xbox One game that has grown to truly bloated proportions is Destiny 2. The loading times are multiple minutes per map section now. Total game is about 105GB on disk. People have even resorted to using external 256GB SATA3 SSDs in USB3.0 enclosures, which are faster than the internal 5400 rpm HDD in an Xbox One S. I do think we will still see a lot of people connecting USB3.0/USB3.1 exte…

Yeah I don’t think I’ll ever forget the first time I bought a game on the Nintendo switch online store, thinking how convenient this will be, only to realize I had to now go but a physical SD card because I didn’t have space.

I hate to say it but this SSD story has been plastered all over the news by the PR machine, mainly because the new consoles have no other inovations whatsoever.... No, it is not going to usher a new area of gaming, just make game have less 'loading' screens, and perhaps larger open worlds.... but it is no near the innovation and changes we experiences in the 90s and early 2000's.... Let me say in a more popular langu…

It's not just load times of maps. Think load times of assets in real-time. Traditionally youd store everything in ram because the disk storage was slow. This leads to obvious caps in how much you can have loaded at a time. But with fast enough storage you can rely on pulling assets from storage during game, not having to preload. This opens all sorts of flexibility that wasn't possible before.

You don't count a load time of almost 10 times faster as a generational leap? Ray tracing right now is just a gimmick, I don't care about puddles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqV7BNoQEr4

It's a generational leap in game load times, but it's not a generational leap in gaming.

Launch titles rarely take full advantage of the new tech

They need to change the title. It's an absolute disgrace to make fun of today's moment. Please share https://twitter.com/Zedmor/status/1271637729646915585

I don’t get it, how is this related to anything going on? Because storage “matters” is somehow similar to black lives “matter”? I really actually don’t understand how you made that leap of logic.

It’s just the word “matters”. If it followed the pattern “[adjective] [plural noun] Matter” I could see it looking like a tacky parody.

What this shows you is how bad consoles are compared to PC gaming.

Are any of these magical load times and such going to actually happen? I feel like gaming companies really don't emphasize load times unless they have to and their energy goes into pretty graphics or other things. In theory couldn't they have ultra fast load times now if they just lowered the amount they needed to load to start? / Manage the amount of content they need to load to start? I wonder if they'll just focus…

The great thing about having these ultra fast SSDs and the associated software stacks is that you can get both faster load times and also more assets. One of the greatest benefits of these SSDs imo is that it tightens up how big your streaming pool has to be, freeing up a large amount of ram and allowing for on demand loading of assets just before they are needed.

Additionally the huge bandwidth means that the consoles can fill their entire ram in between 3ish and 6ish seconds, which should reduce max loading times by a lot.
