Quantum Computers. Not like I'm five, but like I'm a software engineer who has a pretty decent understanding of how a classical turing machine works. Nobody understands quantum mechanics. Lots of people know how to apply it. I don't think quantum technology is going to go anywhere until physicists revamp the theory & the pedagogy in a way that makes it comprehensible.

I say this as someone who passed 2 semesters of graduate QM.

I'm sure there are great explanations out there but I haven't had time to read up on them, but a few of the space things that always bother me when I watch pop-sci space tv:

- "as soon as iron starts to be produced in the core of a star it instantly collapses" - I get that fusing iron costs energy rather than produces it and this causes a collapse.. but can it really be that quick? There are other fusion reactions that are still producing energy, right?

- dark matter / energy - I understand we have observations that indicate there is some type of matter we can't see but it feels a lot like saying "magic" or "the ether".

- how different size stars form - if there is a critical mass where a star "ignites" and after igniting starts pushing away from itself with the energy being produced, how do we get stars of such varying masses? Like, why didn't this 100x solar mass star start fusing and pushing the gases away before they were caught in its gravity? Do the more massive stars ignite on the same schedule but continue to suck in additional matter anyway, gravity overcoming the solar wind?

The problem with this description is that you don't need a fancy shaped wing to fly, a flat board will work. Aerofoils provide better efficiency but are not required.

Don’t agree, unless you only did read the first 1/4 of my comment?

I did, but if I use an extremely thin wing with zero aerofoil (a wing made out of credit-cards or flat balsa wood for example), one "way" around the wing is not longer. Why would pressure be different on the top vs. bottom of this flat wing?

I actually do. It's a spinor. It doesn't transform the way a vector does.

A spinor is a vector. It's not a vector in 3-D space, but that's true of all quantum state vectors, not just spinors.

Law. How much of it rests on technicalities, and how much do judges care about the essence of the facts of a case? You only hear about the weird outcomes on the news. For example, I was once working with an attorney because my landlord didn’t supply heat in the apartment. I started keeping a temperature log, but how would a judge know that the log was accurate? Do I need to prove that my thermometer is accurate... et…

I am a lawyer. In litigation there are two considerations: law and facts. The judge determines questions of law, the jury (or judge in bench trials) determines the facts (often termed the "trier of fact").

How does that work practically? A very simple example:

Let's say someone is sued for the tort of battery. It's the first tort you learn in law school. The mnemonic we learn is "IHOC" which stands for intentional harmful or offensive contact. So we now have what we call the "elements" of the tort, which must be proven individually.

1. Intentional 2. Harmful or offensive 3. Contact

This is where the question of law comes in. What does "intentional" mean? Did I intend to take the action, or did I intend to cause harm? That's a question of law that courts have determined to be that you intended harm. Did I actually have to know the harm that would result? Or maybe I just need to know that it's likely to cause some harm. Questions of law. Another potential question of law -- what does "harm" or "offensive" mean? What if the contact is with my backpack and not my body? These are issues that judges decide as questions of law.

Once we decide on the correct legal standards to apply (which is where lawyers do their most arguing and briefing), then the "trier of fact," generally a jury in the US, determines how the facts of the case fit the law. Did the defendant "intend" the harm? Did the defendant engage in "harmful or offensive" contact? Did the defendant "contact" the plaintiff? The jury decides those things based on a preponderance of the evidence in a civil case, meaning more likely than not.

In your case, you have an issue of evidence. When someone testifies, both sides get to question the witness so that the trier of fact can judge the issue and make determinations of credibility. You can testify that you kept a lot of temperatures, and you'll explain how you did it and that you have personal knowledge of what you wrote. Then the other side gets to try and poke holes in your log. Did you actually do it contemporaneous to your observations? Did you write it down the next day? How do you know your thermometer is accurate? Did you open the window just before taking the temperature? Maybe you have a history of lying to people. Then the jury gets to take your testimony in consideration. They can do with it what they like.

One approach is reductio ad absurdum: If Central Banks can create money without negative effects, then - why tax people? - why even work? Can't we just print enough money for everyone and live happily ever after? I realize these questions are quite provocative and their answering only explains if it will work but not how or when it will fail.

Macroeconomics. Central banks are "creating" a trillion here, a trillion there, like nobody's business. But what are the consequences? What is the thought process that central bankers have gone through to make these decisions? Also why, exactly, are they buying the exact assets that they are buying (govt. debt, high-yield bonds, etc..) and why not others (e.g. stocks or put money into startups)? And then, what happen…

My thoughts on this Modern Monetary Theory is that central banks are just creating these trillions, but they are doing it at a relative rate to each other.

I think eventually it will have bigger consequences, but it will take some time for these trillions to filter on down.

I remember once outcome of the 2008 crisis was that consumer goods like cereal boxes stayed the same size, but the bag inside the box got smaller.

Short answer: there isn't an easy answer. Yet. (Give QC another 50 years). Proof? Just look at all the replies you got: each one is dozens of pages of complex (imaginary) math, control theory, and statistics. The hardest part of QC is exactly what you described: how to extract the answer. There is no algorithm, per se. You build the system to solve the problem. The way the OP was using vector implied a 3D Gibbs-Heaviside vector, not an element of an arbitrary vector space.
