I've read this paper twice now and it's very good. I still don't have a fundamental understanding, I'm having trouble visualizing what happens over time with the stretching and squashing of space vs the light in the tunnel. I've come away with this paper with more questions than answers, but I think all of it is there if I study it hard enough.

- It sounds like (based on the answer you linked) the "expansion" of the universe is a lie in the sense that the fabric of space is not actually expanding, things are just moving farther away from each other via motion. So it's not points on a balloon being blown up (in which case the points themselves are also growing in size), but a force pushing things apart

- If that's true, then I don't understand why the paper talks about light waves expanding with the cosmological expansion, implying that the fabric of space itself is indeed expanding, and talks about how that makes the doppler effect make no sense since the light wavelength expands with the universe. It sounds like there's a fundamental incompatibility with your explanation ("this doesn't expand small objects") and the paper ("the wave itself expands with the expanding space in which it travels, so that its wavelength grows with the cosmic scale factor"), which implies the fabric of space, eg all particles, is expanding

- It sounds like light "sticks" to space as space expands, but new light emitted after an expansion will still have some constant wavelength. So in this way in an expanding universe, light which has a constant wavelength will have further to go between particles, so light will appear to slow down as the universe expands

- If light does stick to space, and the fabric of space is expanding, then I never realized that the doppler effect makes no sense for measuring cosmological expansion, because we wouldn't be able to see it (hinted at in the paper)

- Maybe I don't fully understand why LIGO needs two arms. If you had a clock that could accurately measure light wave crests, could you do it only with one arm? i'll take a leap of faith in believing that a gravitaional wave compresses in one dimension and expands another (maybe not if the wave hits it exactly at 45 degrees?). Maybe the two arms are just for convenience to get phase difference for free?

- I think what I'm missing still is what is actually being measured and how it happens. Space expands, the wave gets longer in one direction, so it has further to go (only for a fraction of time), and it will take longer for the next crest to get to the detector, (I guess the crest itself is still moving at C? but through a farther distance?) so for a tiny blip of time, there will be a phase difference, not for all the light in the arm but just for the one or few crests that make it back along the further length until the wave resets the overall distance?

- Does space compressing and expanding prove that its compressing and expanding through a higher dimension? Especially if new light emitted is at some constant wavelength independent of the stretching of the spacetime it enters? Does that also imply this constant wavelength is happening independent of our (3d) space stretch, so it's a constant through some higher dimension?

Why does time slow down/go faster with movement compared to another object. The well known example that if you travel into space you'd gain let's say 5 years and people on earth 25 in the same time or so. I just don't get it and I can't find any logic explanation. try reading Brian Cox's "Why Does E=mc2? (And Why Should We Care?)". To understand this you will need at least 10 or 20 pages to set the stage before you can start to grasp special relativity.

Antenna Design/RF Theory. I would love a simple text/YouTube series to learn this stuff...would definitely be good learning for the summer :)

I second this. I once worked with an assistant professor to do some of that, and in the end a lot of what we did boiled down to trial and error: do a design, run simulations in some software, and if it doesn't look good try again. It makes me sad that I didn't really encounter anyone capable of explaining things beyond trial-and-error.

I've been mulling making a youtube channel with ten minute videos on immunology; what would be a good starter video that might interest someone like you? I thought I'll do something about antibodies as drugs!

Thank you and please please do it and post a link here or send me an email (in profile)! For me the most interesting is the recognition/pattern matching aspect: how antibodies find what to attack and what to leave alone.

Most definitely one of the hardest questions to answer :) I'll take it up as a challenge!

I think you have to take that sarcastically like when she mentions that it's not like the classical probability taught in preschool.

Even diffusion isn't some magical force guiding chemicals through the medium. It's just random movement that statistically results in the chemical being spread out. This is the same principle that the 2nd law of thermodynamics is based upon. There's nothing magic to it, it's just the statistically likely end result over many particles.

Sort of meta, but I always shudder when someone says that science has "proven" something. What sets science apart from most other methods of seeking answers is its focus on disproof . Your goal as a scientist is to devise experiments that can disprove a claim about the natural world. Not to be rude, but given current daily attacks on science and the scientific method, I can't let this stand - I think your meta intuition represents a fundamental misunderstanding of how science works.

It is simply wrong to think that scientific questions can never be definitively settled. Clearly there are some hypotheses that have been difficult (and may be impossible) to prove, for example, Darwin's idea that natural selection is the basis of evolution. There's ample correlative evidence in support of natural selection, but little of the causal data necessary for "proof" (until perhaps recently). In the case of evolution the experiments required to prove that natural selection could lead to systematic genetic change were technically challenging for a variety of reasons.

In the case of climate change, the problem again is that the evidence is correlative and not causal. Demonstrating a causal link between human behavior or CO2 levels and climate change (the gold standard for "proof") is technically challenging, so we are forced to rely on correlations, which is the next best thing. But, you are right, it is not "proof".

Establishing causality can be difficult but not impossible - the standard is "necessary and sufficient". You must show necessity: CO2 increase (for example) is necessary for global warming; if CO2 remains constant, no matter what else happens to the system global temperatures remain constant. And you must also demonstrate sufficiency: temperatures will increase if you increase CO2 while holding everything else constant. Those are experiments that can't be done. As a result, we are forced to rely on correlation - the historical correlation between CO2 and temperature change is compelling evidence that CO2 increases cause global warming, but it is not proof. It then becomes a statistical argument, giving room for some to argue the question remains "unsettled".

My point is that there are plenty of examples in science where things have been proven -- DNA carries genetic information, DNA (usually) has a double stranded helical structure, V=IR, F=Ma, etc. And there are things that are highly likely, but not "proven", e.g., human activity causes of climate change.

While some of the issues you bring are remain unproven, what's really absurd is to think that no scientific questions can be settled.

Also, what makes me irritated about this blurt is that there are many "layers" of what people could reasonably call "crypto". There are the cryptographic primitives. There are higher-level crypto algorithms and functions that use those primitives. There are even higher-level cryptographic protocols, file formats etc. Then there's actually the application, applying crypto to a real-world problem.

Even in each of those, there are two "levels" of implementation: specifying an exact algorithm that implements a solution to problem x, and actually producing the code that implements the algorithm.

At some level, there is no ready-made solution to every problem. Even if the foundations are implemented by "somebody else", the line's blurry. At which level of (lack of) expertise and which level of "lowness" of the implementation should I start to worry?

It's actually two systems. One called the innate that we have in common with most forms of complex life, and the adaptive immune system, something we've only seen manifested in jawed vertebrates.

The innate immune system is a set of cellular signals/behaviors that are triggered by cells being exposed to damage and or stress.

These responses are generalized. Just about anything odd can invoke them, so they are typically the first line of defense. These include things like alteration of permeability of the local extracellular matrix (swelling), formation of impermeable tissue barriers to isolate damage (cysting, compartmentalization), and setting up signaling molecule gradients that attract phagocytic/cytotoxic cells to the terminate anomalous cellular activity/clean up the place (macrophage attraction), and alteration of metabolic activity to generate thermal stress (fever).

The issue with the general immune system though, is that it's non-specificity and versatility makes it a bit like a sledgehammer in the context of a complex organism. It can do as much or more damage as it can do good, and it isn't that good at only eradicating the exact thing causing the issue without excessive collateral damage.

Enter the adaptive immune system. The adaptive immune system is composed of various cell lines, and organ systems all specialized into dealing with specific facets of an immune response, and mediated through a set of special cellular surface receptors.

The facets of the adaptive immune response are: antigen recognition, coordination, moderation, and memory.

The major cell lines are T and B cells. T cells are further broken down into cytotoxic T, and helper T cells.

The adaptive immune system starts with naive lymphocytes. These cells rapidly multiply randomizing the ever loving crap out the region of the genome dedicated to the MHC receptor. By doing this, it'll cause the receptor to fold in ways that will allow it to bind with certain types of antigen (think of it as the antigen's key fitting the Mac's lock.) This proves of new receptor generation is mediated by the Thymus. The thymus tests every new variant to see whether there is any sensitivity to proteins that may expressed in other parts of the body. If it finds that to be the case, itinduces that particular cell to suicide to prevent the proliferation of immune cell lines with a high chance of being prone to autoimmunity. Those that survive are allowed to move out into the lymphatic and circulatory systems to patrol for their particular antigen. Upon meeting it, a few things happen. First off, the immune cell can help kick off or amplify a general immune response. Secondly, signaling proteins are released to attract more leukocytes to the area. Third, an antigen bearing cell will migrate toward the Thymus to recruit more immune cells. Once an antigen presenting helper T cell binds with a compatible B or Cytotoxic T cell line, that cell line undergoes massive replication without further modifying it's receptor, and the helper T cell does likewise.

B cells will create and secrete antibodies. Small snippets of protein that will bind to and foul up the workings of the antigen to which the are sensitive.

Cytotoxic T cells will patrol for and engulf antigen it encounters, either breaking it down with a burst of oxidative substances, or if the antigen is detected being presented on a cellular membrane protein, and a helper T cell is near by to enable the response, a cytotoxic T cell can induce cell death of an antigen presenting cell, but with much greater specificity and numbers than the mechanism used by macrophages. Once the cell death takes place, the cell will either clean up the remains, or attract macrophages to do so while it heads off for the next target.

The cytotoxic T cells are handicapped in their destructive potential by the need for a nearby Helper T cell. B cells just shotgun anti-antigens into the blood stream.
