That might have been true 20-30 years ago. Today, all of the easy oil has been tapped. They're going out farther, deeper, and under much high pressures than before. Oh, and they're less regulated. > You don't drill a $100 million deepwater well without all the bells and whistles. You will if you can make a couple $B off it. It's a risk. The deep gulf has mudslides that take out rigs. It happened to Taylor Energy in 2…

What does that have do the ability to shut in a well? A shut in isn't stopping something that's leaking or stopping a blowout. It's the ability to deliberately and temporarily stop production. A loss of containment is very very very bad and a huge problem, but it's not related to a shut in. I'm well aware of shallow hazards (e.g. mass wasting aka mudslides). I've mapped them in many areas. I'm well aware of the ongoi…

Because the people who made the comments won't know that someone replied since HN doesn't have a notification system.

That doesn't seem like a reason to disallow necro-replies? The primary reason people write replies isn't communication with the parent commenter.

True but at the same time if you refute a claim someone made in the comments, it seems only fair to give them a chance to reply.

Which is a good reason to add a reply-notification system, not a good reason to block replies

Really? Care to share your experience/details?

Sure, I bought a Delta Airlines bond with a 3.4% coupon for 93 cents on the dollar due in a year from now. Provided Delta doesn't go bankrupt in a year I will make 10%. They have a pretty healthy balance sheet compared to their peers and I don't expect the government to let the sector fail in such a way that bondholders get wiped out.

I would of thought holding Delta stock would have more than 10% upside if they don’t go bankrupt

I think HN lacks a notification system intentionally. HN is very much geared towards reducing flame wars, and I think that is part of it.

If they wanted a notification system I'm sure they could have implemented it.

Is there an open-source library that does this? I know readability existed at some point but now its no more. Using this, I'd love to build a self-hosted version of Pocket that supports full-text search etc.

Considering that the front-month oil contracts went negative today (paid to buy a barrel of oil), I think more (well funded and adept) players will try to hastily arrange more storage facilities. There's just no place to put the stuff right now. It's quite difficult to turn-off an active well. Deep-water wells are all but impossible to stop.

I am surprised there hasn’t been an “accidental” pipeline leak around Cushing. Who could have known that leaving a valve open could dump so much oil onto the ground.

He’s not talking about stock, and you’re right - their stock would have a far greater return. Potentially over 100% within a year.
