Taxing only the wealthiest americans could easily fund a UBI for everyone else. The middle class will not have to make any sacrifices

Because the Department of Education has a ton of currently unused high capacity kitchens and access to supplies. In addition the DOE runs similar programs, such as a free summer lunch for kids, and so has the organizational know-how to run a program of this scope.

NYC had a pre-existing large scale school lunch program (more than lunches, they offered breakfast and after-school food too). It has been repurposed.

The comments in here seem a little negative currently but this is great news. Think of all the people in NYC who didn't have access to clean and regular food before the virus.

Seems like an extremely obvious thing to do, and yet so few places are willing/able. The food kitchens in the bay area are being hammered right now and we're barely 3 weeks into the shutdown. This is not something that private charity can handle.

I though slavery was having a job you couldn't quit and weren't paid for? Having no job and guaranteed income seems pretty far from being owned by another human.

Just because they aren't able to serve your exact needs doesn't mean they shouldn't serve millions of others.

Maybe if you reached out you could encourage them to provide whatever your exact needs are? My guess is it's more than just you in your shoes.

Vegan and gluten-free really starts to balloon the already immense challenge they are facing trying to implement here. I feel bad for the three people that actually need gluten-free, but everyone else will have to eat “that deadly gluten!”

Do you get food banks in the US?

Yes, but they usually rely on donations.

Also, a lot of needy children get their primary meals at school.
