A significant portion of the population will be reduced to poverty, but at least we can keep as many elderly alive as possible.

I think your point could be stated better but the sentiment behind is worth exploring. If the economy collapses there will certainly be an increase in misery, spousal and child abuse, suicides, and murders. This may be a time where hard choices need to be made. Maybe we really are confronted with a "lesser of two evils" type situation.

Earlier quoted context omitted.

"New cars" is obviously poor decision making, but aren't cell phones cheaper than food nowadays? It should not be surprising that poor people have cell phones. The gadgets we once thought of as luxuries will continue to decrease in real cost.

And they aren't buying new cars. They are more often buying junk used cars with predatory financing contracts ( https://youtu.be/4U2eDJnwz_s ) Parent poster was just spreading Fox "News" propaganda.

I dont think there was any link to Fox News. Can you source why you think that is the case?

Excellent guide and very nutritious. On a side note I wonder how the pandemic will impact food service in the long run from the perspective that before the pandemic many people never prepared their own meals. Now in many areas people are for the first time limited to groceries and produce instead of restaurants and fast food. If people continue their own food preparation moving forward this will have interesting cons…

We haven't reached shortages and such yet - and we also would have to have food scarcity for a long time to change the habits of Americans.

This will be "real" food scarcity, not the stuff manufactured by the left and the media, with food deserts and all. I haven't seen fresh beef or chicken and the grocery stores for two weeks now.

I doubt we'll get to the point of our grandparents and great grandparents, where they didn't waste anything when it came to food because they grew up during the depression.

But it will be a net positive for the country to go back to cooking their own meals, generally eating healthier, and eating less calories overall. The USA doesn't need to be in the top of the lists of obesity.

There may be casualties in the food and restaurant industry. But in a way we reached peak food with how ridiculous some places and prices were becoming.

Good list. The problem, at least here in the UK, is that these cheap foods/ingredients are exactly what we're seeing empty on the shelves now. Unfortunately for those who live cheaply, expensive things go last.

In that case, expensive things won’t be expensive for very long.

Here in SF everything is still fully stocked in the morning on a weekend at least. Fresh veggies, fresh meats, cans of stuff. There’s even some rationed toilet paper on the shelfs.

But I only shop on Saturday mornings so maybe that’s why.

I'm confused. You start off implying that it would take a lot more severe shortages to change American habits and then later seem to say the current (coming?) changes in habits "will be a net positive". Are you anticipating more severe shortages?
