I'm just going to quote the CDC again, because public health authorities are really the best sources of information we have and I don't want to participate in the "telephone" effect that paraphrasing begets: > The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. > * Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). > * Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person…
As a non-expert on coughing dynamics, it seems incredible that one person can infect 50 others by this mechanism (reported New Rochelle transmission from one patient, confirmed by contact tracing and testing contacts).

I suspect there will be flights, from the UK (which is why it was left off).
I suspect UK was left off because POTUS has resorts in Ireland and Scotland, and no where in Europe. There's nothing credible about UK being off the list while every surrounding country is on it.

I suspect improvement when the weather warms. There is little community spreading in the summer countries of Africa and southern hemisphere.
Tom hanks caught it in Australia. It's summer there now. Most of the southern hemisphere isn't developed, I don't think they're testing

Actually the UK has done a lot more testing than many other countries, more than double the rate of France, and 4x of Japan - https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/covid-19-testing/ I don't know where you get that info from but it is severely outdated or just outright wrong.
Not sure where they get their data, but where I live (Ontario, Canada) we've done 231.5 tests per million people. Number of tests: 3395 Source: https://www.ontario.ca/page/2019-novel-coronavirus Population: 14,659,616 (estimated for 2019-Q4 found on Wikipedia)
The source for each of the figures is in the last column of the table.
Did you just want to post Ontario's numbers (Canada was not in the table at all) or are you questioning the accuracy of the worldometers page?

What do you propose be done instead of a travel ban?
A bad idea doesn't stop being a bad idea just because of the absence of alternatives.
No, shutting down the travel from a country with an outbreak that is not contained is not a bad idea.
Stop politicizing this matter and either trust your government or go to your bunker.
Everyone the past week has been plain fearmongering and it's disgusting.

It may, but improvement regarding weather is related to people staying inside and in very close contact with one another when its cold/winter, nothing to do with temperature killing the virus.
Re: U.S. will suspend all travel from Europe for 30 days
#637Just de-boarded and re-boarded an aircraft going to Europe from NY because of this „small“ missing „detail“ in the initial announcement. 4h delay and the people who de-boarded the plane initially, are not re-boarding because they probably left the airport by now, not knowing they had wrong information. Ouch.
The most important detail that was missed, it seems, is that this doesn't go into effect until midnight on Friday 03/13.
However the stuff about cargo being included is really odd. As if he was freestyling rather than reading.
Other than that; I fail to see the point of this. There is already community spread in the US and the UK. The ban seems arbitrary and politicized.

#638One thing though; which airline will fly only american citizen back from europe? will they fill a plane with those customers only? I think my main concern is that most if not all major European airlines will cancel all flights, regardless if there are a couple of US citizen on the flights. Meaning it's probably still going to be somewhat problematic to get back (if not from London then of course)

Containers seem to take >=7 days from Germany's closest international port to Newark, NJ (practically NYC), last time I looked at routes and prices.
Oh, that's probably true. They're optimized for throughput rather than speed. Ocean liners that carry passengers take 4-5

What do you propose be done instead of a travel ban?
1. Restrictions on internal travel 2. Isolation for those exposed or showing symptoms 3. Paid time off work for people who can't do their jobs in isolation, to make sure people report exposure and symptoms 4. Suspension of public gatherings Some of these are being done voluntarily and/or by local governments, but that's very patchy.
