#25One of the many reasons why I hate Windows 10. Just get out of my way and let me use my computer how I want.
I'd put on my "smug Linux user" hat but to be honest my distro of choice (Ubuntu) has Amazon search integrated by default. The only saving grace is that it can be easily, completely, and permanently removed with just a couple of commands.
Seriously considering a Macbook for my next computer at this point.

How do normal people (who use Windows) think that this is ok? In what universe is that possibly ok - to put ads in a paid-for OS? No matter the context, no matter the version of an os, no matter the reason, no matter what the ads are for, no matter that they could through some questionable hacking or editing be removed - ads in a paid-for OS. Has the whole world gone crazy? What is going on here?

I have several hypotheses:
- Some people don't even think about it. Many probably don't see there is a political aspect to browsers. What harm is there in suggesting something? It's not even clear that it is an ad, they are not going to buy Edge, it's free. What's more, they may only know one OS and take whatever they are provided with as is without any critical look. They probably trust their computer (yeah, and this is scary, but since the system shows this ad, some will probably take it as good advice to follow, and Microsoft is very wrong doing this because they know it).
- Some are accustomed to ads. Some may even ignore them without knowing. Some people probably notice but don't care. By the way, why shouldn't a computer display ads in its UI if you are not against the idea of ads? (I personnally hate ads)
- Some probably think it's not okay, but possibly forget about it and get on with their lives anyway, and/or don't tell anybody about it, so we would not even know whether people think it is ok.

It's certainly shady, given that they own both the product they're advertising and the medium they're advertising it through.
I don't expect that I'll be able to get them to give me a top spot for an ad saying "Concerned about Microsoft's tracking policy? Mozilla Firefox is here", or "Still using Edge? Why not just get the original -- Google Chrome is here'.

Note that the "top sites" aren't my top sites. They're ads. And then there's an ad at the bottom.

Are you talking about the old Edge or the new one? The new Blink-based Edge is pretty good, and doesn't have the lingering incompatibilities of old EdgeHTML.
