I was just answering to the claim "when just the lidar for a waymo car costs more than the entire tesla vehicle". Which is clearly wrong.

The tesla you can afford still does not have self driving capabilities either btw.

On the contrary. When you know the Tesla system is running on real time on a hardware accelerated card IN the car, it becomes way more impressive than a google presentation made with supercomputers after a long time of processing.

Realtime has nothing to do with absolute performance. It's about meeting your deadlines. And, of course, often real-time systems have much worse throughput performance than a non-real-time system on the same hardware. After all, latency guarantees are not free.

Yup. I think we agree on that. It doesn't matter if you have a highly performant pipeline for detecting other cars if you have a random 200 ms VM pause as another car blows a stop sign in front of you.

...but if it starts braking hard in 250ms that's still a very superhuman reaction time.

Too right! I seem to be encoutering garbage software all the time, either in use, or by expanding an existing project (including widely available, popular OS projects).

I have often wondered about this, so I do find this interesting. Of all of the info presented, one question I have is how does the AI decide when to go at a 4-way stop? In real life, I'm am constantly amazed at how confusing a 4-way stop is to humans. I've been driving for 40 years. I still hate 4-way stops. In the late 70's in Connecticut, I was taught the first person to arrive goes first, followed by the person to their right and so on. But there are so many holes with that heuristic itself! Sorry for the dumb question but what is a 4-way stop? In the UK we have roundabouts (but many drivers still have no clue which lane to get into, and don't migrate to the lane on the left after passing an exit, like they should).

It still strikes me why so many people are still against a future with self driving cars. Sure, people throughout history are scared of change & new tech. But if you look at this video and compare the amount of stuff the camera catches AND processes, with the things you are seeing & processing, it's really hard for me to see me being better at it than a computer. Driving appeals, very much, to the ego.

Having freedom and control over a physical system that is bigger and more powerful than you, is a liberating experience for those whose spirit is used to a smaller, lighter frame.

Car manufacturers know this - they cater their interior design to appeal to this factor - and it is indeed a cultural phenomenon well and truly imprinted on Western society.

"Freedom means, freedom to drive yourself anywhere you want."

This 'liberation' has become a chain. Real human beings spend hours in these containers, driving themselves somewhere, feeling powerful.. driving to their work or home, or whatever.

2 to 4 hours a day, on the mobile throne.

When computers start to take that freedom, its going to tweak quite a few freak-outs. And really, why shouldn't it?

Ultimately, automotive industries are hedging their bets that cars will no longer be personal possessions, but rather something you summon on an as-needed basis.

This would be a highly desirable condition for the rent-makers/lease-share holders, who are really pushing this forward - along with their buddies in the insurance mega-industries, who stand to gain a great deal more control over their customers lives when it comes to computerised automation.

Myself, I'd personally prefer cars were user-serviceable and user-operable, under no conditions do I need a computer, just make me a better car. Preferably electric, simple as possible, and ships with a manual.

Please understand, Tesla works only with only Camera & Radars (at L2 level). Where as Google Waymo works with pretty expensive and lot of redundant sensors ie., 360degree LIDAR, cameras & Radars (at L4 level). Tesla sells vehicles in volumes, Waymo doesn't (as it is exhorbitant). Hence comparison is not apple to apple. I do agree Visualisation in the google video is more appealing. After seeing reviews of the Tesla Autopilot vs Openpilot it became clear to me it is way to early to trust Tesla's Autopilot (and Openpilot).

They both use visuals only and are easily confused when situations are a little different than 'normal'.

I even think Openpilot performed a little better than Autopilot but because Openpilot only has a forward looking camera it fails often on tight corners.

Google on the other hand is aware of the complete 3D surrounding. So even if road marks are gone or are unclear it still can estimate where the vehicle should be on the road.
