I don't know how to value a stock, but after riding in my friend's Tesla a few times on road trips. I seriously doubt I'll buy a ICE car ever again unless for specific purposes (mini-van). I know 10 people who owns Tesla, the 6 or so friends I've spoken about it feel the same way as I do. If this keeps up, I think Tesla's stock price is under valued.

There have been a few news about EV vans. Also Van conversion have been going for quite a while, you see a few on youtube. I'm surprised nobody have made an EV model already..

The Chryler Pacifica PHEV is basically a half EV van .. plugin hybrid with 30+ miles of electric-only range (with another 300-400 miles of hybrid/gas range)

An all EV van would be great but this is closest you can come today.

Tesla has consistently said the Supercharger Network is open for any manufacturer to adapt. " "Tesla is aware of these problems. CEO Elon Musk first floated the idea of sharing its Supercharger network in 2015, but with only a few hundred Superchargers operating at the time, the proposals did not gain any momentum." "Tesla’s chief technology officer JB Straubel has strongly suggested that plans are now underway. He s…

I feel like you're painting the second option as bad when it's exactly the same flow as buying gas. Nothing about paying for electricity needs an account and more than buying gas does. I agree that Tesla's system is pretty slick but the alternative isn't bad.

The alternative is worse. It doesn't really matter if it is the same as ICE. Every time I use my credit card at my local gas station it asks me if I'd like add my phone number to receive text ads. Every time. Telsa is not going to let that happen. People are paying for a premium for electric cars still and that premium should come with something better than the alternative. Telsa has delivered on that. The concern is that traditional car companies aren't. Telsa made the decision early to own the process from beginning to end. Just as Steve wanted with Apple when he came back. They do not want to be dependent on a third party for their customer's experience with their products and their dedication has shown through the lifetime ownership of their vehicles.

I for the life of me cannot figure out what could possibly justify this valuation for Tesla. Sure, their cars are pretty great, they have a ravid fanbase, and they have a pretty entertaining CEO who excels at driving interest in the company. They would need to execute perfectly and deliver more cars to customers than Volkswagen in a few years to justify such a valuation right now, and I just don't see that happening…

To me, its the next big bubble out there.

We had dotcom, we had subprime mortgage, next we have the VC bubble.

Tesla has had 5 profitable quarters in 10 years. Uber loses billions of dollars a quarter. Chalk it up to R&D or whatever you want, but this is only sustainable because of this giant bull run.

When the money starts to dry up, these companies are going to implode.

I've read somewhere that Cadillac's Super Cruise is vastly superior compared to Tesla's autopilot. I'm not sure the software gap is as wide as you think.

Cadillac's Super Cruise and Tesla's autopilot are very different systems. Super Cruise relies on detailed Lidar maps, cameras, and radar to function and will only function on scanned limited access highways. It's like operating a slot car on a closed track. From a software and sophistication perspective, Autopilot is a more advanced system that improves over time. It uses Machine Learning and other advanced technique…

That doesn't seem entirely accurate. Super cruise only works in supported areas, and it gets updates at a dealership instead of over the air. Both will improve over time and both appear to use ML.

The biggest advantage they have is their supercharging network. Every manufacturer is focusing on ADAS and electric cars but no one is focusing on the network. That is their biggest advantage and the only reason to buy a Tesla, granted their cars are great but without the network it’s just an expensive commute car.

Something I've never understood is why you would want your auto manufacturer to own energy stations. Why wouldn't you just leave that up to the gas stations?

I have incredibly little faith in industries to establish standards nowadays. Every car manufacturer will eventually make their own charging network, all with their own proprietary connectors. Any aftermarket connector to try and work for all of them will be sued out of existence.

ICE autos are locked into three near-monopoly supports: - Manufacturing scale is enormous, with vast supply chains and deeply ingrained middlemen & unions locking in prices. - Sales is via local monopolies(-ish) which dictate what models & variants of a few brands are available & manufactured. - Power comes from an infrastructure of commodity stations which are not controlled by vehicle manufacturers. Most EVs are a…

There is one place where it currently is a pretty large failure, and that is repair shops. The waiting times are very large compared to other manufactures.

Once your house is wired for the charger, how hard/expensive is it really to swap it for a different one?

If you can do basic electrical wiring, you may still need to get a permit and have the change inspected. What exactly is needed is highly jurisdiction dependent. If you are not handy, it requires hiring an electrician to make the change (~$100-500)

That's a decent amount of money, but it's not that much compared to the cost of an electric vehicle.

This is Tesla not WeWorks. We often see companies having high valuation and this same sort of comment plays out. Implying that they have to deliver more cars than Volkswagen is also implying that their cars are equivalent. They are not. Tesla is the future, we saw this with Netflix. Folks couldn't understand it or believe it till blockbuster went broke.

The future is a monopoly?

Im not saying your opinion is wrong, but most of the world cant afford a tesla, so I have no doubt that your friend group is skewed with salaries way above the mean.

I agree 100%, but most of the world won't buy Tesla stock. So the market for both the stock and the car are the same population. A lot of them owns BMW, Audi, Lexus. When many of them switch to Tesla, where do you think the stock will go?

If you're wondering what could possibly justify $100B, think in terms of "What if Tesla put all the other car companies out of business?" This isn't as unlikely as it seems: https://twitter.com/whyvert/status/1219288360096694273 Trucking revenue was $700B in 2017. There's a lot of room to grow.

He's comparing the most popular car from Tesla to some of the least-popular cars from the other manufacturers. Audi sold 200k cars in 2019, but they were SUVs, not sedans. I would guess the Model 3 sales will crater when the Model Y comes out.
