Like I said - as a benchmark. I'm an engineer, I believe in numbers, feedback, and comparison.
Something is behind the term "a lot." Does it mean a lot better than you were doing before? A lot more than similar sites? A lot more than the average of all sites? "A lot" could mean any of these things, and until you know which one you mean, you can't possibly get a reasonable answer.

Yet you consider "a lot" a valid label for a number? Something is behind the term "a lot." Does it mean a lot better than you were doing before? A lot more than similar sites? A lot more than the average of all sites? "A lot" could mean any of these things, and until you know which one you mean, you can't possibly get a reasonable answer.
I'd expect replies to qualify their number for "a lot" with the context they're considering it in. There's a lot of different benchmarks, and I was interested in seeing what the HN crowd had in mind. Peter's comment is one such example :)
