It is physically plugged into the computer so you obviously don't need an icon cluttering your UI. This is the Apple design philosophy you paid extra for.

I'm glad that I can always see the other end of the ethernet cable, and therefore do not need a way to determine if there is an active connection.

It took almost 5 years for Apple to recognize and fix the butterfly keyboard, which was an obviously bad design. Microsoft is 5 years in with Windows 10 but they are no sign of awareness at all about how crappy it is. Which is sad because Windows has some good points and advantages (I love Visual Studio, notably), but it's not useable as a daily driver anymore since Win8.

Well, last year [0][1] consumers weren't able to have changes to the defaults. Well, some apps would change, but others wouldn't.

However, you can get the impression it happens more regularly because when individual default apps, like Photos, get updated (or if there is a problem in the registry) they may reset the association for the files they expect to handle.

I've come to accept that there is no good OS (maybe iOS, but not really). You're just picking your poison.

Want to be spied on and have your system slowly accumulate cruft and grind to a halt over the course of a few years? Use Windows.

Want to be constantly fiddling with your system just to keep it running on a day to day basis? Use Linux.

Want to be constantly spied on and probably also hacked? Use Android.

Want to pay a bunch of extra money and still deal with a decent number of bugs¹ and atrocious default settings/annoying user-protection features you have to turn off? Use macOS.

¹All of them are riddled with bugs

Thanks. I looked into disabling Hyper-V but I think there is some IT installed spyware on this machine that squawked when I tried.

There is no way to know that unless they have been presented with a viable alternative that they understand.

I had a fascinating conversation a little while ago with some slightly younger friends who are very much of the digital native, smartphone-since-birth generation. They couldn't live without their social media and always-online everything. They still thought it was creepy that when they went travelling they started getting all sorts of ads about places they were going and so on because they realised it meant something on their phones was spying on them. They didn't like it, they would just tolerate it because they had no other way to stay connected to what is, for that generation, a normal life.

Or it's physically plugged in, but the driver stopped working with the last OS update and it never bothered to tell you, it's just been using wifi and you never noticed, because there wasn't any indicators.

Because apt upgrade, or pacman -Syyu is simply extracting files and using hooks to generate a new initramfs. Windows Updates has to do a lot of operations to ensure the registry is correct, and then batch upgrades to create and remove scripts to run after restart.

Wouldn't you be able to say the same about literally any OS that doesn't have a completely walled garden? I'm positive I can find software on linux that bundles the askjeeves software as well. And probably MacOS. You blame the software developer for that and never use their product, you don't blame the OS.

A real package manager, a standard consumer os feature, would remove this dark pattern.
