As someone who grew up on Windows when I initially started working on a Mac daily this drove me absolutely nuts. It could be worded much better. The way Finder sets the default view is equally unintuitive

Being able to associate a particular file with application instead of all files of the given type might be handy feature.

However useful, I have a feeling that is more likely to be the exception rather than the rule and should therefore be prioritized accordingly

You'd be hard pressed to convince me that Google is not the new Microsoft. Apple is very much the walled garden nightmare but as far as embrace, extend, extinguish, goes it seems like Google dominates that pretty hard.

Google loves to acquire, stagnate, then extinguish.

MacOS doesn't even hijack what you want it to hijack. I have to set every .sh I make to open in text edit manually, and I still sometimes get prompts to search the app store for an app to deal with these spooky .sh files even with textedit listed as default on the right click menu.

I love how, once you install Xcode, it becomes the default editor for a load of plain text formats.

Yes Apple, I really do need to boot up a full blown, 7GB+ sized IDE to edit some markdown. Apparently TextEdit wasn't good enough.

Apple News was dead before it started. A lot of actually worthwhile news sites and aggregators that we want/need don't even support RSS themselves anymore for various legal reasons.

I thought RSS simply fell out of majority favor. Are there legal reasons behind it as well?

I'm not convinced it's an abuse of power; it's a feature any developer can take advantage of. Your apps get their own protocol, so you can deep-link into one using a URI. But you can also register them to open certain contents natively.

I'm not sure how it works, maybe there's some metadata in the HTML. You can see the same thing in action with the Jira app on Cataline now - any Jira link you click will load up and render in the native app.

That said, it's definitely a problem when you're redirecting these links to things you don't actually support any more, without any way to opt out.

I consume most content via RSS. It certainly doesn’t feel dead to me. There are ways to get Facebook, Instagram and Twitter content into RSS too if that’s what you need.

I am interested in getting these three as rss feeds, not that I use them very much, much getting them into a reader would help others very much.

a quick search shows some things saying public pages can be made RSS, but nothing like a bot that can suck in what your wall or whatever would be and push it into a feed that can be read otherwise.

Here's to hoping the twitter open api thing and the few stories about portable data and standard export for social etc come true.

Or maybe I need to dig deeper, but my gut feeling is/was - finding a way to pull these feeds would lead to the method being killed off by these walled gardens at some point so don't bother. I'd love to be wrong on this.

Why would providing similar behavior to an OS app warrant a ban? Many many apps on various OSes supplement default OS apps.

This was in fact a policy very early in the iOS app store's history. Not for a long time though.

It's still in effect and the most recent example would be banning software monitoring usage after Apple replicated the functionality themselves.
