Yep. The price has risen every year since the acquisition with no new major features to speak of. I imagine it will rise even more under new management.

I'm perfectly willing to switch to Bitwarden, although I will miss the ability to securely share logins with my girlfriend's LP account.

Use Pass (https://www.passwordstore.org/) to generate and store passwords locally, GNU Privacy Guard (https://gnupg.org/) to encrypt them, and then use git (https://git-scm.com/) to backup and sync your encrypted passwords on all your devices in a distributed way.

Pass is an open source project by the guy who made WireGuard (https://www.wireguard.com/), and there are open source apps for iOS and Android too, which you can build yourself for maximum security.

Setting this all up is not exactly easy, but once you get it going it's very easy to use, secure, and convenient.

I think the 'overnight' part is key here. I can easily get approval for 20k-100k in necessary software but the approval process can take 1-3 months. If a free service suddenly goes paid without notice, it is much more disruptive than waiting 2mo to start with a new paid service.

I can't speak for this person's business, but profit margins can be slim.

This year my wife's company will have paid more money to contractors than she profited. Sure it was a "meh" year, but if she spent a few thousand dollars unexpectedly on IT, it would have erased her profit.

My point is that when you go out of your way to do things Free, it's because you couldn't afford the paid solution.

Sometimes "free" is the maximum the budget will allow. Sometimes it's just about feeling you're been ripped off with a bait & switch.

Unfortunately 1password is the only one that doesn't give me headaches while using it cross-platform. I wish I could use an open alternative with an equal UX.

Any reason why you'd say unfortunately there? I see it as a pretty big perk rather than an unfortunately. But I would also like to understand a bit more so I can pass along any necessary feedback to our team.

Private equity (PE) has a bad reputation for a good reason. I wouldn't jump to migration immediately, but you should keep an up to date export in a secure place. PE can take years to drive a company into the ground with debt.

Nice option, will make the move over now I think.. Out of interest before I go and google/write it, is there any 'automatic-as-possible' transfer tools/scripts ? The 1Password cli is a nice touch I must admit.
