This is a grammatical nitpick, but I see it over and over and over.

The title says "When Will Google Shutdown Stadia?"

It should be "Shut Down", which is a verb phrase. A "Shutdown" is a noun, eg, "There will be a shutdown in March."

Another common example of this:

You need to log in. (long in == verb)

What is your login. (login == noun)

I think Stadia could be super cool for simulation games like Cities: Skylines. The lag isn't nearly as much of a problem and the ability to have an extremely powerful computer simulate many more "agents" would be fantastic.

Surprisingly, OnLive found lag was an even greater problem for applications with a cursor than for games. Plus your suggestion can be implemented with cloud compute (a backend behind the UI) - it doesn't need to be cloud streaming.

No problem. Just reinvent X11 and let the display server render the cursor.

What?

Google has a vested interest in reading your email. Google lets users think that setting up a mail server is difficult, that email is a dead end communication medium compared to walled gardens, and that phishing is difficult to combat effectively.

It sure is when they don't even bother to show the From address, there's no way to make links unclickable as an email administrator.

At this point, between Microsoft and Google ruining it in different ways, email has very little hope as a medium.

Honestly, as soon as Google announces a new product, my first thought is to wonder how long until it is shut down. Google has completely lost my trust in relying on any of their products. Even when they come out and claim that this product will not be cancelled, for reals this time, pinky promise, etc. I simply can't believe them.

They shut down Google+ and that was the "new core of the company" or something like that. So I have no problem imaging a stadia shutdown after a year or so.

I feel like this product is just a trojan horse for Google to gather and sell customer data in some form. I'm just not convinced that Google has any real interest in the video game industry itself at least not in the same way as a Sony, MS or Nintendo. Further to that, this offering just feels so half hearted that it almost certainly will go the same way as most Google "experiments" - I would avoid putting any money into their budding gaming ecosystem as a consumer.

"No traction" for a Google product just means it's not the next Search or Gmail. It doesn't mean that zero people use it. Thousands or millions of people used Hangouts, Google Reader, Google Code, or Picasa - they'd have been considered big YC successes. If big YC companies all got shut down if they failed to turn into another letter in the FAANG acronym, maybe people would become reluctant to use services from YC co…

Picasa was quite popular before Google bought them, as was Google voice (aka GrandCentral)

> "...it costs money, the service costs a monthly fee, and on top of it you have to buy the games." WHAT? I've been under a rock and I assumed that it was a service where you buy a controller, already own a streaming device (or maybe the controller has the device in it), and pay monthly for the whole service. You have to buy the games too? That is an immediate about-face for me. If they shut down the service then I j…

lol yeah. I thought the games catalogue was included. Now this is just retarded.

There is a no monthly fee version that you only have to buy games to use eventually that will be limited to 1080p streams. 4k costs a monthly fee + the cost of games though they are saying there will be some discounts to games if you're paying for the better service.

"Google kills all their products" is a bit of an overused meme trotted out at any launch... But for Stadia it's a pretty legitimate concern, I'd say. The model where you're still "buying" the games ties you to the ongoing operation of the service much more strongly than in many of their services where an eventual migration might be a little painful, but it's still possible. The counterargument would be that they've d…

if you think about it, it isn't that much different from steam, there's an offline mode there and gabe promised a way out if they ever go out of business, but the concern isn't completely remediated by either. the only sure way to have your games working in the future is - unsurprisingly and unfortunately - to crack your copies.

Yes, I was going to mention Steam, but decided not to. Frankly I don't put a whole lot of stock in the assurances of an "escape hatch," I'm not really sure that such a thing is possible to reliably promise.

The better "guarantee" on that end is the knowledge that Steam makes Valve lots and lots of money so they'll probably want to keep it running. The fact that you do have some sort of local copy and cracking would be an option if it came to it is some comfort also, though that's not really a solution that scales to the size of peoples' massive Steam libraries. There's also of course DRM-free stores like GOG as an alternative.
