At least they respect international rules, China just ignores them.

It's playing bully on a long-term basis, no need to look over the world for "a" example. Just look at all of China's neighboors in international waters.

I am wondering, what is the quid pro quo here. I don't like most of these people, but they don't ring to me like the kind of people who could be bribed with a seat at a prestigious university's board.

It is about indoctrinating a mindset or bias rather than a direct quid pro quo.

Yes maybe, but I don't see how having a seat at a university helps that.

the seat does not help these CEOs, it helps China. They accept the (public) seat in exchange for (hidden) access.

Taiwan (Republic of China) is not part of China (People Republic of China). It is a different and independent country. Politicians are elected by the citizens, Beijing as nothing to do with that.

Tsinghua University has an interesting history. When the republican party lost the civil war against the communists, some scholars (including the university president) left and recreated the university in Taiwan.

That's why there is today the Tsinghua University [1] in China, and the National Tsing Hua University [2] in Taiwan, with really similar logo.

You have to be brilliant to get into Qinghua. Same is true with MIT. However, having known Chinese students who got offers to both Qinghua and MIT, the choice for them was really a no brainer.

Which one did they chose?
