In the last 4 quarters Tesla has delivered 271,521 model 3s. That would make it about the 12th best selling car in america. That is about as many escapes ford has sold. That is pretty phenomenal.
With much higher ASP and margins it truly is something to consider.

Can a Tesla compete on brand, design, interior fit, build quality, support, charging speed, repeatability, handing ? AFAIK it loses in all of these categories.
I don't have any numbers, but on the brand point I'd figure Tesla might be in a stronger position than Porsche in the younger demographics.

Simple. Everyone is getting into EV. There isn't a car company around right now that doesn't have an electric model coming out in the next couple of years. And so Tesla has nowhere to go but down.
Tesla has a major headstart and noone is near them or gaining on them. It's actually simpler. The attack campaigns negatively influence the stock.
VW ID.3/4 are looking like being winners and will likely outclass the Model 3/Y. eTron, I-PACE and EQC are all selling well against the Model X.
And again. Everyone is coming into EV this year and next.

#95I've practically stopped hearing about Tesla in the news, which must mean they're doing great. Great job, Tesla folks!
I assume someone took away Musk's twitter privileges?
Of course, we're still seeing issues where Musk is getting sued for threatening workers on Twitter for unionizing, but that's a slightly different issue than lying about production predictions.

The operational problems can't be understated either. Customer service experiences that are all over the map (Ranging from they came out to my driveway and fixed my car to its been in the shop for 3 months with no end in sight), production issues, QC issues, engineering issues... for every way they tend to "surprise and delight" they also tend to find ways to horrify by not nailing the basics. And you only get to pla…
Please have a look at Tesla's revenue growth. It is a pretty clear hockey stick graph. See in this article: https://cleantechnica.com/2019/03/24/teslas-incredible-growt... The problems with customer service and production quality are to be expected if you scale at the speed that they currently do.

Younger demographics have less disposal income so they are hardly the type of customer you want to be betting on.

A number of sources are reporting that Musk said it in an email to employees: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-09-26/tesla-sur...
On the contrary, he said "had a shot" at 100k, which implies it's unlikely but possible.

Tesla doesn’t calculate margins the same way other manufacturers do. Take with a grain of salt.

#100That first line after the chart is the big takeaway in my opinion. The backlog of orders increased this quarter which is both good news, since it shows demand is not a problem, and bad news, since Tesla still can't produce cars fast enough.
Demand mix is a huge problem though. Model 3 is cannibalising sales of the S and X models. Which means their ARPU and gross margin has rapidly decreased causing impacts to their revenue and profit. Tesla's fiscal position is simply unsustainable.
Lowering ARPUs and tightening gross margin % are an issue - yes. But the single most important factor here is gross margin in absolute terms. If sales volume increases to offset decreasing ARPUs, this doesn't make 'Tesla's fiscal position simply unsustainable'.
