Funny, the "professionals" took over. I knew it was inevitable when software engineers started arguing for certification, talked about how they were so much better people because they hated writing code outside their jobs, talking about how people learning to code was a conspiracy to ruin software engineer salaries, and began constraining strictly the spaces that people could act in. All that was always a harbinger of IBM-as-life.

Of course this is inevitable. When I was young, you just did what you did and tried to find other people who also did what you did. Maybe they liked you, maybe they didn't. If they didn't you found someone else or you made that group of people. It was all about freely associating.

The nerds got beaten but that was always going to happen when this thing became big.

When Terry Davis (of Losethos fame) said deeply offensive things that were personally offensive to me, we all tried to understand that it came from a troubled mind, that we could admire the work without tolerating the outbursts. With the socially awkward folks, it was even easier. We could gently direct while moderating their extremes.

Cancel culture is a mistake. I'm not bold enough to face it under my real name so I'm just going to weather it under the tarps where my people stand with their tenets like lit beacons barely visible in a storm. If you invoke Crocker's Rules, if you can forgive and redirect, and if you can disagree with words without invoking nuclear retribution, you can find the rest of us in our scattered micro-communities.

Good luck.

Every episode I read about fell into the category of "socially awkward adult male". If we can't, as a group, tolerate awkwardness, we are very much down the rabbit hole of mandatory social conformity. By all means, point me to a real abuse scenario by Stallman. I like being prove…

This story has obvious falsehoods and as far as I can tell, is totally false or about the wrong person.

1. As far as I can tell, he was never on the board of VA Linux.

2. RMS was never married. https://www.quora.com/Is-Richard-Stallman-married

3. It is a widely known that if anyone ever associates RMS with "open source", he will interject to say that he vehemently disagrees with open source and had nothing to do with its creation. The fireball guy who posted this story, clearly knows very little of RMS to post this without mentioning the fact that this part absolutely is false.

4. He dislikes the word "open" in general, and would never ever use it to describe anything he was involved in. Again, key fact that is clearly false.

5. RMS does not usually have bad hygiene.

6. One of the people who coined "open source" was involved with VA Linux, his name was Eric S Raymond. Perhaps this this is about him.

“I am sceptical of the claim that voluntarily pedophilia harms children. The arguments that it causes harm seem to be based on cases which aren’t voluntary, which are then stretched by parents who are horrified by the idea that their little baby is maturing.” “There is little evidence to justify the widespread assumption that willing participation in pedophilia hurts children.“

Diversity -- but no diversity of opinion... Inclusiveness -- but let's ostracize the non-conforming aspie... Fairness -- but let's fire people or make them resign from unrelated positions for their personal opinions, because obviously all of a person's life should serve as a big PR, and god forbid they don't play the role 24/7. Someone might call them for it on Twitter, and what could their employee/organization do o…

I wish I had 1000 points to upvote this comment. But I just want to thank you, sometimes I feel I have become insane or out of touch, seeing the way people twit or comment here. It feels good to know there are still different opinions from the now ubiquitous ultra-SJW worldview.

No, I am not. But what proof do you have Minsky had sex with a minor? I didn't see it. I think Stallman didn't see it.

Who needs proof about Minsky? RMS said he thinks the children couldn’t be sexually assaulted because they wanted it. You’re defending this creep? Do you agree that it’s not kiddie rape if the kids don’t complain?

The whole Stallman story very much seems to be modern day thoughtcrime

> The whole Stallman story very much seems to be modern day thoughtcrime

It's actually not a modern day thing, it's more like classic propaganda. Someone motivates someone to lie about something, then tells specific people in the press who are willing to write about it, often for some monetary gain. This has been done for as long as "free" press existed.

from reading just this comment, i would have assumed that stallman was stripped of all his land and titles and made to starve under a bridge. what really happened was that he went from holding leadership positions in three prominent institutions to just one. it's easy to have strong feelings about these issues, but let's try to keep things in perspective.

Apparently to zero, and if we're to believe the article, he's been made to starve under the bridge too (if I'm to believe the countless HN threads about homelessness in the US, this is how being homeless looks like).

Unless something has changed recently, stallman is still the head of the GNU project (https://www.fudzilla.com/news/49493-richard-stallman-says-i-...).

and according to stallman's personal site, he's found interim housing (https://stallman.org/).

Spot on. You have just outlined the double-speak of the SV technocracy, which have imposed these hidden codes on those that they disagree with. Mind you that the media has now amplified this and have used all of this to create a new enemy called Richard Stallman. As long as this appalling cancel-culture behaviour stops, he certainly won't be the last one to fall victim to these purity tests. Absolutely hypocritical i…

He pretty much was / is. He lived at MIT, his life’s work was GNU and the FSF. All three were taken away, and more than that - people were excited and driven to do this.

He’s had to move, he’s lost all his potions, etc.

There was very little discourse and punishment was swift. That’s not really the way justice should be served. This man (RMS), essentially spent his life fighting for others. He was thrown to the wolves without discussion.

It's not just them, this seems to be a far leftist direction in general.
