Perhaps that's because most women need a man's income to not be dirt poor. I appear to be the highest ranked woman on HN. I appear to be the only woman to ever have spent time on the leader board. It has resulted in nearly zero professional connections. When I complain about that, I get blown off and told that's not something I should expect from HN, nevermind that it works that way for plenty of men. I was homeless…

I'm very sorry that you go through hard times but when you take a look at the homelessness statistics you would understand men are having it in comparison statistically speaking much harder.

It's really not that simple.

I'm trying to step away from what feels like an ugly pile on. But for the record: it's not uncommon for men on HN to say things to other men like "You've got a lot of karma on HN. You must be smart." No one says that about me. When I comment on it, I am invariably dismissed and attacked, told I'm bragging about and obsessed with meaningless internet points, etc. That's the essence of sexism right there: When a man do…

Could be the time, identity politics and feminism has a very different form in Europe.

I seriously doubt that.

If I had to guess at a cause, I would say the recent debacle where RMS was forced to resign from two prestigious positions.

People get cranky. They feel threatened. They take it out on a convenient target, regardless of how unjust it is and never mind my track record here.

That sounds like it was intended as supportive. If I've not misread your intent: Thank you.

Anyway, really trying to just walk away from this one.

True in the sense that it creates a "floor" for the depths to which people might sink. But this process can still sink pretty low. Consider how women couldn't vote in the US until 1919 -- a half century after blacks. And a more modern example that was on display for all to see: the confirmation hearings of Brett Kavanaugh. There were not a lot of facts available -- no date, no place, no witness that could remember. Y…

A number of witnesses came forwards?

Exactly, racism is much more of a fully-stable equilibrium than sexism, since full dehumanization of the other sex is always going to be impossible, if only due to adjacency. And adjacency can be critical to rights movements: one of the big successes of the gay rights movement was combating the stereotype of evil deviants through a strategy of positioning gay people as neighbors, brothers, sons, etc; regular people w…

.. I mean, the Saudi king has lots of wives but until recently wouldn't allow any of them to drive?

For a closer example, there are plenty of married Republican politicians who are willing to make statements on abortion that imply they have no idea how the reproductive system works.

I have heard that fathers with daughters make for a very tough jury in rape cases. Generally speaking, if you want to nail a rapist to the wall, you should fill it with middle aged men, whether they have children or not, and actively avoid women. Middle aged men remember what Randy jerks they were capable of being. Even if they have no daughters, they have mothers, sisters, wives or girlfriends and they want their wo…

That's very insightful.

And yet those men are still sexist, but in a protective way.

The problem is that it is reasonable to expel people (and, indeed, to want to expel people) with a much much lower burden of proof than would be required to lock them in a cage. There absolutely should be a different standard for “can continue to be in this school” and “can continue to walk down the public sidewalk”, and also decided by different people.

No, it's not. "Sneak was expelled from harvard for raping somebody" is not something you want people reading without getting your day in court.

Well, you just wrote that and people are reading it and I seem to have no recourse as you describe. Which is it exactly that you are advocating for?

I recovered from being sexually abused as a child in part because I actively sought out protective male friends.

I've long believed the antidote to "bad men" is "good men." In contrast, a lot of rape victims simply conclude all men are evil and it becomes a barrier to recovery.

I think they don't know another way to feel safe. It seems like the safe bet to them: just don't trust any men.

That wasn't my reaction.

My experience relating being raped to friends was generally not a positive one. I found women tended to be more open to believing my story. Men were pretty skeptical. Of course, sharing my experience didn't happen for many years. In the mid 1980s the idea that men even could be raped by a woman was a bit farfetched both socially and legally.

As a guy, I can't quite imagine being raped by a woman. Unless she was wielding a suitable device, anyway. But I have, after wild parties, found myself in bed with women who, in retrospect, I didn't find all that appealing. And yes, I know, that's a cliché. Even so, I'd never make a big deal about it. We all do stupid things when we're intoxicated. "Así fue ... son las cosas de la vida".

Sorry. I am dense. Maybe you were raped by a man.
