2.5% eh? We should all immediately stop flying... This is outrageous. Just imagine, 2.5%!! But on a more serious note, this article is again wrong, like so many others about climate change. Being a combination of clickbait and false assumptions, it fails to miss the point entirely that first, 2.5% are irrelevant, but also that it makes no sense whatsoever to tackle this now. The technology is just not there yet. What…

Any time someone actually does the math on sucking carbon out of the atmosphere, it seemingly becomes clear that it is simply not scalable to suck the carbon out of the atmosphere. Have you done the math, and if so, why is everyone who comes to the aforementioned conclusion wrong?

Stop fucking flying everywhere. If you think you have to travel far enough to justify a flight, think again. Do you really have to be there in person? Telecom technology has matured enough to make personal presence unnecessary. Your instagram vacation can wait until we have cleaner travel tech.

Even if your demand was valid, the first demand should be "stop driving gas-powered cars!" long before you ever get far enough down the list to talk about air travel.

As noted in this article, aviation is responsible for just 2.5% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. To put that number into perspective, cars are responsible for about 10x that.

If everyone stopped flying today, the impact on climate change would be almost nothing. If everyone stopped driving, the impact would be huge. Furthermore, there are very few good alternatives to flying if you actually need to get somewhere really far away. Cars with internal combustion engines have tonnes of lower impact alternatives though - electric cars (if you have reasonably clean electricity), public transportation, biking, walking, etc.

Aviation seems like a weird sector to focus on, if you actually want to make a difference.

> Telecom technology has matured enough to make personal presence unnecessary Holy moly that's sad if anyone actually believes this.

This is mostly cultural no?

We've done an excellent job of moving away from basic animal instincts thus far, what exactly determines what cultural behaviours can and cannot be changed by technology?

For business purposes, I believe it. I've been working remotely for a long time. Sure, it is easier to do some things in person. But not impossible to do remotely, and it saves everyone time and money, so it is worth learning to hold even large, long meetings remotely.

Now, for seeing family, travel makes sense. You can't hug your grandmother from 2000 miles away.

"Over all, air travel accounts for about 2.5 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions — a far smaller share than emissions from passenger cars or power plants." 2.5% means we should focus on reducing somewhere else in the near term.

Eeeeh, it depends. People in the US are going to go totally librarian poo if someone comes to take away their cars.

I will happily continue to vote for and fund our over-budget under-delivering mass transit projects, even though I (and the overwhelming majority of people providing said funding) won't be in a position to actually use them for the foreseeable future, because it's the right thing to do.

However, if someone tries to take my car before those alternatives are in place, we're going to have a problem. My problem will be getting to work. The transport authority's problem will be obtaining money from a hostile and/or evaporated tax base.

We build a better world by working together, not by raiding each other and hoping that somehow, in the aftermath, the mass fixes itself.

It is an interesting exercise to ask people to imagine a world without air travel. Where you can't just appear halfway around the world at the drop of a hat. Travel again becomes the domain of boats & trains. To almost anyone you talk to, banning air travel sounds completely ridiculous. In reality it wouldn't be enough by itself. It's on the lower end of action that is required.

Or we invent solar-powered planes. Not feasible yet, but who knows.

Don't do math, don't question the dogma, and don't bet against markets. Coastal florida prices are skyrocketing because underwater real estate is just gonna' be the new trend. And Holland is leading the world in supposed refugees of underwater refugees. I'm incapable of thinking for myself and believe everyhing I'm told. Let's go to war again in the Middle East! Better downvote this comment for offending your regurgitated ideologies.
