It's still free, you just dont realize you're paying via app data, and the open mic on your phone. Ohh, and the tracking of data when you dont goto FB too.

Apps can’t use the microphone on iPhone unless you allow them to and it’s always visible if the app is not in the foreground.

Good! We need to 1) further strengthen an awareness of the "free product means you pay with your data" and 2) channel that into willingness to pay for products. The more news that link "paying" and "social media" together, the better!

We really need to strengthen awareness of the fact that paying for a product doesn't mean your data isn't getting vacuumed up.

Why? It's a horseshit platitude. Plenty of things I pay for also surveil, advertise to me and sell my data.

If it's free then it sells your data. If it isn't free then it probably also sells your data, but maybe not.

Does the linux kernel steal my data though? It's free.

It is not. A company that does not charge for use must get revenue by selling data. A company that charges for its service doesn't have to get revenue by selling data. It is "freed up" and can turn a profit through fee and skinny advertising.
