Even if that were true everywhere, people drive vehicles other than the one they used for their drivers test in their lifetime.

And just like when they learn to use the shifter, they need to learn what that thing on the other side of the steering wheel does too before driving off whether it's tested or not.

I commend you on your attention to detail under every circumstance, but not everyone masters the windshield defogger (to the point where they don’t have to look at it) the moment they sit down in a rental car.

This is why I detest touchscreens for most car functions. Specifically AC, with old fashioned knobs I have full control over AC without taking my eyes off the road, but nowadays everyone wants to put it on their infotainment system, hidden beneath 4 other buttons.

For what it's worth, Mazda recently decided that it doesn't want touchscreens in its cars anymore because they're a safety hazard. "Mazda is purging touchscreens from its vehicles" https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=20200335

I had a top model Mazda 3 2014 before (manual Astina) as the #2 and everything about it was just first class usability wise.

The rotary navigation knob let me do everything on the screen, and all the buttons for everything else were in intuitive places. Also a great radar cruise control, simple yet highly functional HUD, and things like rear cross alert which is amazing when backing out of 45 degree parking spots next to some big trucks.

As much as I'd love a Tesla as my next car I'm not sure if their UI is where I want to go.

Presently riding to save my health, and money.

In my own experience, any software developed under government contract has horrendous UI/UX. Probably because it's hard to specify "don't suck and be pleasant to use" in terms of formal system requirements.

I have seen the same thing for in-house corporate software. I don't think it's specific to government, but that any software that users are mandated to use and is developed for a small number of users will tend to have terrible UI. Particularly when the people building it are not allowed to talk directly to the people who will be using it, and have no idea how they do their jobs.

A friend not only talked to end users but flew with them to iron out UI/UX ergonomics issues pulling high (or negative) g's.

I have knobs on the climate control on my car, but I still need to look at the screen. The problem is the knobs have no stops so I still need to look down to figure out what they're set to after they update the electronic display. My method is to turn the knob back to when it stops moving and then it is now in a known state and I know how many clicks each setting is away.

That’s the thing it doesn’t stop. It’s just a rotary dial with the lightest detents I’ve ever felt. You just spin it and it’s a circular buffer through every setting.

tbf this could be achievable with Apple's virtual click tech. Would like to see how that'd work in practice.

I imagine the star trek interact can really apply arbitrary forces. So you can simulate a knob for example. Not just a tactile sensation when you're already in (near) contact with the interface.

Isn't this what Project Soli [0] was trying to achieve.
