Sorry, English is not my first language. There are these painkillers called "treo" in Swedish. They dissolve in water, producing CO2 in the process.

I don't know if they are available in other markets, but in Sweden you can buy them everywhere.

I was setting up some software on my pi4, just installing some packages with apt. Most of the time it was idling because I was away and not paying attention... and it indeed got very hot. Not uncomfortable to touch just yet, but this was really minimal load... Sounds like I'm getting a fan.

Did you actually try to run the Pi as a desktop replacement? That is what they are advertising. A desktop replacement that is useable for a couple of minutes and then throttles is not something you want.

That's another claim that needs evidence. It seems possible to me that the thermal throttling is designed to prevent logic errors.

It's way, way more likely this is the reason than anything to do with lifespan.

Genuinely curious person here. What is the key reason to use photon size instead of wavelenght? To stress the quantifiableness of the radiation being capured by the thermal camera? To be honest it is the first time i've seen photon size semicasually mentioned in a conversation. Then again i only had physics in high school.

Photon size wasn't used. Micron is an unofficial name for 1e-6 m, the lengths of 0.7e-6 m to 1e-3 m correspond to the wavelength of infrared radiation:

So "those 10 micron photons" there mean "the photons of the radiation with the wavelength of 1e-6 m."

A quick look at Newegg shows an Intel NUC that includes a CPU, memory, and an SSD at over $500. I don't think so.

I know right? People need to quit suggesting an Intel NUC as an alternative to $35 RPi.

I am one of those people, and I do this whenever people want more performance, connectivity or anything else that the PI 3 or PI 4 doesn't have. Then in my view a logical alternative is to man up and pay the reasonable price for an Intel NUC to achieve the solution one is looking for.

I appreciate you actually trying. A "negative" result is still valuable. What I don't like about the article is that small fan have to spin fast (= noise) to generate enough flow. I'd much rather use a 80 mm fan, slowed way down, but I suppose I'd had to roll my own case for that. Better still, wait for someone to start offering this (or maybe this: http://blog.flirc.tv/index.php/2019/06/24/new-pi-4-cases/ )

I'm not the best judge, but these are really quiet fans. I can hear the ones in my laptop, but don't notice Fan SHIM at all. We've had a couple of customers who have, but a replacement fan has been quiet- guessing it's a tolerance issue with the plastics.

Just to clarify here, all laptops of reasonably small size throttle. Throttling below base clock is the only problem, and it was only a temporary one that was patched out with new firmware on 2018 MacBook Pros.

If Apple can get away with it then the RPi will also get away with it, but it is still a highly deceptive and fraudulent practice. I spent $2000 on a XPS 15 and peripherals two years ago; if I had known about the thermal throttling I would not have purchased it. All portable laptops throttle. What we are vaguely talking about is a firmware bug in the 2018 MacBook Pro i9 that was patched within the first week of release.

It's only a problem if throttling takes them below the advertised base clock under normal conditions. There is absolutely nothing deceptive about this.

A gaming laptop is not really a laptop at all by comparison. They still get less than 4 hours of battery life under load, they're an inch or more thick, they're heavy. Many of them do not fit in backpacks. Gaming laptops are essentially designed for plugged in operation.

I'm a little confused at what's "sturdier" about a gaming laptop as well. Did you break your XPS 15 physically? Gaming laptops have tons of flex and plastic-ness, see MSI.

What benchmark did Dell promise you exactly? Dell didn't rob you of anything. Your own unrealistic expectations did.

I think if you focus too much on "$35" you will be very disappointed with the rpi. You need a power supply, that's $10. You need an SD card, that's $10. You need a case, that's $10.
