Heh, I know the feeling. I have three retired Pi systems (two OG units and a 1B+), but I have three running 24/7 as well: first is a 2B+ running OSMC as my media center. The second one is a 3B with a sense hat, running rtl433 and MRTG to graph outdoor and basement temperature and humidity received from transmitters on-premises, barometric pressure from the hat (and also displaying data on the LED display). The last is a 3B+ running Home Assistant.

I've been - cross my fingers - lucky with MicroSD cards (usually Samsung, sometimes SanDisk), but having USB3 on the new model is quite the game-changer.

ETA: I do have rsync backing up my Pi setups, so losing a MicroSD would be merely annoying rather than catastrophic.

Edit: A different trick is to run the bootloader on the sd card as usual, but the OS itself can be elsewhere, usb hdd, maybe network share.

On the other hand, it isn't great at anything (besides the community - which shouldn't be underestimated, sure). It's also using a pretty proprietary chip - if you build a project off of a Pi, it's hard to migrate to a custom PCB. As a NAS, you probably would want ECC and a bunch of SAT…

does not look like it. the output is still hdmi and the usbc is used for power

They don't need to, that's an official jack, often used in digital cameras or video cameras.

Google "audio video jack".

Update: Oh, I just read the linked article, apparently these cables aren't as standardized as I thought. There are some links in the comments.

It really depends on your use. If you plan to build a desktop replacement, thread performance matters. If you want a small cluster node for educational purposes, more slow cores are better.

Clock for clock, A72 is 2-4x faster than A53. But yeah, perhaps it's better to have a lot of small cores for a cluster.

That's great, but if you need crypto (because you have LUKS storage and send AES encrypted data over the network, like in a usual NAS case), A53 with aes instructions may be faster than this A72 without one. And so far it seems these cores don't have aes instructions.

MotionEye OS is good as a camera surveillance system. Needs a USB camera or a Raspberry Pi camera. Takes a bit of tweaking to get the optimal camera settings (using a GUI), but then it works well. LibeElec is useful as a home theatre setup, based on Kodi.

I haven't looked at LibreElec in a while - have they improved the setup for infrared receivers and remotes? That's the main thing that caused me to switch to OSMC. I'm using an IR receiver hooked to the GPIO pins, and OSMC made it quite simple to set up with my old RC6 remote.

I know we're talking video here but I wanted to share something. My father just got a new set of 'ears', he's been going deaf. They are titanium studs that are implanted into the bone just behind the ear, about the size of pencil erasers. They work through bone conduction. The hearing part are replaceable electronics that snap on and off the studs.

The current gen are about the size of a quarter and are bluetooth capable, so he can sync to his devices, watch movies, etc with these little guys tucked behind some hair.

It got me thinking, I wonder if audio guys have started to look at some of this sort of thing to really "hear" music perfectly. Very interesting tech.

I wish pi-hole was just a tiny bit more polished. I found it takes a lot of work (and knowledge of linux networking) to get up and running properly and stable.

What issues have you encountered? I haven't seen any problems with it.

As in 'HifiBerry' the company producing a range of HAT sound devices? Since the relevant pinout is unchanged, why would any of their products work any differently to how they do now? Am I missing something?
