I am nervous this means Apple will hold back features from iOS to get people to buy an iPad. For example, they announced the new Files app with iPadOS but there is no reason that shouldn't all be available on an iPhone.

It goes the other way as well. There are already a bunch of iPhone-only features in iOS.

So Apple goes the opposite way compared with Purism: making different OS for every device. What's the point?

the multi-tasking/multi-window looks incredibly complicated, full of hidden gestures/commands that aren't really discoverable

Honestly that's exactly what the iPad needs. The focus on discoverability has crippled the iPad since the beginning, so its about time Apple started making the iPad faster to use. Software designed to maximize productivity always has a learning curve.

But this is functionality that normal computers can do in immediately obvious ways.

Edit: “immediately obvious” was a bit strong. They can do it in ways that are significantly easier to discover.

More info in the press release https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2019/06/the-new-ipados-powers...

Thanks! So it runs on iPad Air 2 and up. That‘s nice! The iPad Air 2 was released in late 2014!

iPads still don't have a calculator app? I find that baffling.

Is this really such a big issue though? There are hundreds of free calculator apps you can download through the app store.

The one you want is PCalc. It isn't free, but it's not expensive either.

Based on my colleagues, nothing about computer interfaces is immediately obvious.

Mouse support would be cool. Much easier to use a mouse when interacting with text then doing touch in my opinion.

For example? Keep in mind the iPad has keyboard support can already support most of the common keyboard shortcuts.

yeah but once you learn it, you'll retain the knowledge

yeah but once you learn it, you'll retain the knowledge Pretty much the attitude of people learning Windows or MacOS in the late 90's. ("literacy") It's gone from having to win an audience in the early iOS days, to firmly having the audience in the company's grasp.

what's the solution? not implement multi-finger gestures due to complexity and just omit the feature altogether?

I'd rather have those capabilities? My drawing apps on iOS all have tons of multi-touch gestures. I appreciate they are there.
