Why would every message need to end up on Facebook? Perhaps you should think of it more as e.g. e-mail.

Economies of scale. Whoever can do it cheaper and at scale gets the job.

Perspective is important. Messaging is already so inexpensive as to be free, it's time to move towards the other end of the pendulum.

We need privacy and accountability more than the ability to further reduce the cost of a message from $0.0001 to $0.00005

Yes, and big tech should similarly be regulated like traditional telecommunications, where subscribers of telco A can call subscribers of telco B without problems (unlike most chat services).

This seems like a terrible idea which would merely entrench monopolies further. Phone number interoperability was to establish an unbranded phone network that could be serviced by any telco. Making every service deliver messages to and from Facebook would be an absolute nightmare.

Phone lines are very expensive, and there is limited space. In other words, phone interoperability was regulated into place because no one can have five telephones. Many people have five messaging apps. Its inconvenient, but not like a phone.

What do you mean?

I can't message my friends on Snapchat from Instagram, but I can call my friends on T-Mobile and ATT from Verizon. Phone companies shenanigans go back a long way, so there are more than a few lawsuits involved, in order to get to our current state for calling.

That's a nonsensical comparison. Phones all have one purpose and mechanism: voice calling. Instagram is based around a public photo-blog. Snapchat is ephemeral photo-mesaging. You would be requiring social media sites to replicate each other's functionality. If I want to send a message to a twitter user, can it be longer than 140 characters? What if I am john.doe one one platform but you have the same name on another? Who keeps it?

No, telcos were interoperable by fiat because there can only be so many phone lines.

People [on the left] claim the daily show (and the like) are how the newer generation’s get their news... so your claim isn’t clear cut as you imply.

People claim lots of things, that doesn’t make them so. Watching the Daily Show is a programmed event on a comedy channel that people opt-in to. Something popping up in your Facebook feed because a friend posted it or an algorithm chose it is pretty clearly different.

Clips from such comedy shows pop up out-of-context in the recommended bar in you tube. Did I turn on a channel?

A bit ironic coming from Kara, who jumped on social media to condemn the Covington Catholic students before the whole story was out, but at least she admitted her mistake https://twitter.com/karaswisher/status/1087443815269584897

What should be the rule about what videos are banned? We don't want to ban parodies I suppose? What if the author of the Pelosi video claims it's a parody? It would be great if we could allow parodies and jokes as long as a reasonable person can tell that this is indeed a joke. But that won't work since people disagree about what's "reasonable". I guess we can require that parodies and jokes are tagged as such, so pe…

It’s not as though you can use the magic p word and then what you did is parody. What’s parody and what’s not is indeed a difficult line to define, but it’s not a new problem or a problem that we lack prior art for.

Especially with regard to politicians, regulating speech in this area like that video treads right on parody. Do they ban SNL impersonations too, Latenight TV mashups? No more Dana Carvey or Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey. Is that what they want?

Does Alec Baldwin ever try to pass as actual Donald Trump or is it obvious that it's parody? The Pelosi video was made with the malicious intent to deceive.

7 in 10 voters thought Palin said she could see Russia from her house but it was Tina Fey on SNL.

I'm assuming people railing on Zuck here don't like Zuck, so it's odd to me they would prefer he become the world's arbiter of permitted speech.

I don't prefer he become the arbiter of speech. I'd prefer the government would regulate his business and hold him accountable for the damage that lies and misinformation cause on his platform. Given that he recently called for more regulation, surely he'll agree.

Man, I'd prefer the government would regulate you. See how easy that is?

I'm very uncomfortable with the current trend of trying to get big tech to self police. They'll never get it right because of moving goal posts and moreover I don't want a private company to have that power in shaping social discourse. If we as a society deem that type of content to be improper and that it should not be allowed on such platforms, then let's make that explicit from a legal perspective and regulate the…

You make it sound like the 'current trend' is a new phenomenon, but before the rise of Facebook newspaper and TV companies were self-policing and it was essentially impossible to publish a message to millions of people without going through some sort of editorial filter.

The new trend is that someone with a few thousand dollars can tell 10 million people that the Pope has endorsed a particular politician and a million people will believe it. I'd like to think that we are not so easily influenced, but then I find myself clicking on a screenshot I created just 30 seconds earlier and I realise the human brain just isn't designed to be constantly alert to fakery.
