Reminds me of the old Google Caja project. ”The Caja Compiler is a tool for making third party HTML, CSS and JavaScript safe to embed in your website. It enables rich interaction between the embedding page and the embedded applications.”

Also just realized, as much as people like to push all the snark about Microsoft regarding Embrace, Extend, Extinguish, that's exactly what Google is doing right now. With them dominating browser share, they can now push tags like this that only make ads more annoying. Geez we so badly need a more balanced browser landscape.

The good thing is that they are already starting, so that the red flags are risen early.

Have you considered that it is already too late? Just look at Microsoft bending the knee to Chromium

Or just switch to Firefox on Android and use uBlock Origin or similar.

Firefox on my phone crashes ALL the time. I can't load 3 web pages without it crashing. Is Android doing this on purpose? I just cannot get firefox mobile to work, sadly.

Firefox Mobile is being phased out and replaced by Fenix; have you tried that?

Am I reading this wrong, or is Google pushing a fairly complex element with substantial security considerations into HTML exclusively to solve their UX problems with AMP and the pre-load search carousel? Like this seems like it would be a fair amount of work for browsers to implement, and Google is the only party who would benefit.

Isn't this why we have the W3C, so standards don't get made unless multiple people benefit? This seems like Microsoft with IE6 all over again.

Yes, and this is going through the W3C's WICG process: https://wicg.github.io/portals/

If you want to contribute, there's a repo full of issues that's completely public: https://github.com/WICG/portals/issues

> This seems like Microsoft with IE6 all over again. IE6 gave us XMLHttpRequest because they wanted it to build Outlook for the web. That seems like it turned out ok. In general I think building browser-specific features, seeing what works, and only then standardizing is a much better path than starting with W3C.

No it isn't. It leads to fragmentation of the platform, and pretty soon you'll start seeing "Works best in Chrome!" tags on websites, because developers are too lazy to implement fallback solutions where (or whatever other proprietary extension) isn't supported.

I already see them all the time, but this time dressed up as “please upgrade to a modern browser. But not Firefox. Not Safari. Definitely not Edge.”

Wait what? Can you give me a source or further reading on this?

I don’t use an Adblocker due to ethical concerns. (Not trying to convince you to do the same, just explaining.) It’s, uh, really not that bad. I rarely notice banner ads and the like. If a particular site gets really egrigious, I leave the site. I suspect that after using Adblock for years, your brain has forgotten how to ignore them.

I've had a similar experience as the GP, and I find it awful that autoplay videos will follow you around the page, pop-up modals will interrupt you in the middle of reading something, and ads will take up 40% or more of the page, loading between paragraphs while reading. It's hugely distracting to me. We could make the same argument: you've spend years without adblock, and they have worn you down to the point where y…

Why would you ever spend time on a site that did these things? Even if you have an adblocker, why would you use such a site on purpose?
