Unrelated to cert problem: Yes, clicking on the link installs the plugin, but it is suprising to see that firefox claims that it is the news.ycombinator.com, not storage.googleapis.com, that wants to install plugin. Could it be a security issue since if an attacker somehow manages the post/inject a link for a malicious plugin in a credible site, firefox will claim that plugin is from that site?

verified it works on Ubuntu 16.04 with Firefox 66.0.3

in my case I had to copy the link and paste into a fresh tab as clicking actually caused firefox (nightly) to block the install with a message: "news.ycombinator.com - Nightly prevented this site from asking you to intsall software on your computer"

This appears to be a mistake. It's clearly bad that things can break this way. But this happened because a certificate expired. Mozilla didn't have to require signatures and certificates for extensions. They did so because they want to protect users. Protecting users with signature schemes, increase complexity and, thus, the risk of debacles like this.

People take their privacy seriously. Our addons were disabled. I was browsing for a few minutes until I saw ads and didn't realize what was going on. Unacceptable that the default to an expiring signature is to disable them completely.

You would have said the opposite if an expired signature had caused your browser to be compromised!!!

The default behavior seems desired to me.

The problem was that the certificate was allowed to expire.

A have ton of respect for the fact that it was enforced!

Doesn't work for me. Not sure if a user.js alteration is blocking the fix or what...but I don't want to (even temp) remove it and I certainly don't feel like going through all those prefs to figure out the issue.

66.0.3 (64-bit) osx 10.9.5 i only managed to change the status of devtools.chrome.enabled can only be 'modified' instead of default, not sure how you 'enable' it? new to this :) clicking or copy pasting the link gives me the error msg too
