I disagree with the paren't sentiment but I think they raise an interesting point: is/should there be a license that says: you can read/use/modify {this} but you cannot use it as a training data for the AI.

{this} can be code or text or an image or any other content.

We don't do any training on your data. Telemetry is largely for feature use tracking (eg we should really do better around this component, everyone is using it). There is absolutely no ads overlap at all. Literally none. Disclosure: I work at Azure but not on VS Code

Is there a way we can see what data specifically is being sent to your servers from our local VSCode installations?

Should have nothing to do with github and everything to do with you putting your code on the internet with a permissive license. Google or Eclipse could do this too (and I expect they do, since it's the best corpus of code available).

Google does, in a way, with the GitHub data set in BigQuery -> https://cloud.google.com/bigquery/public-data/#sample_tables

I’ve always found this phrase an oxymoron.

Where humans are involved, mistakes will happen. Trusting someone but verifying their work is a safe and sane pairing.

Could this explain some of the QA blunders like some Windows 10 users losing files after an upgrade?

If so the move may turn out far more costly than any savings or telemetry gains.

Microsoft’s “performance” wasn’t bad by any objective metric during the Ballmer era. If the stock market were rational, MS stock would have been doing a lot better under Balmer than it did.

But then again, if the stock market were rational, Lyft would have never been able to go public and Tesla would basically be worthless.
