"But over the past three months our conversations with members of civil society and academics who are experts in race relations around the world" Sorry I do not agree with this sort of shit. I have left facebook long back as a platform. I do not want some Phd in Gender Studies and Race relation to dictate what I can read and what I can not.

> Going forward, while people will still be able to demonstrate pride in their ethnic heritage, we will not tolerate praise or support for white nationalism and separatism. So you can praise and support your ethnic nationality, as long as you're not white.

White is not an ethnic nationality. A person from Ireland has no ethnic or national ties to a person from Italy. The fact that the citizens of those two countries were not considered "white" 100 years ago demonstrates the invalidity of "white" as an ethnic or national group.

> White is not an ethnic nationality

This is not true for all intents and purposes, and it's bizarre to mention nationality in a thread about white nationalism. "Ethnicity" refers to both fine-grained and broader ethnic identification. Being black is absolutely an ethnicity, while being Yoruba is too. By looking at an White American's DNA profile, one can predict their ethnic identificationwith 98% accuracy.Historically thiss was also the case, it's just that Christianity was the standardmarker for being European/white. Even if that weren't true, being white is still an ethnic group as people perceive it today

> A person from Ireland has no ethnic or national ties to a person from Italy

They do, it's called being ethnically European. The Irish and Italians share a genetic similarity, historical, religious, cultural, and linguistic affinity. Consider how much closer to Algeria Italy is, yet Algerians and Italians share none of these similarities and gues what... Algerians aren't white.

> The fact that the citizens of those two countries were not considered "white" 100 years ago demonstrates the invalidity of "white" as an ethnic or national group.

This is completely and demostrably untrue. The U.S. Naturalisation Act of 1790 and the following acts limited U.S. immigration to "whites of good character". In this period, more immigrants came from Ireland and Italy combined than nearly anywhere else.Ben Franklin even specifically referred to Irish as white.

Your comment demonstrates the invalidity of your knowledge of this topic to be honest

> Our efforts to combat hate don’t stop here. As part of today’s announcement, we’ll also start connecting people who search for terms associated with white supremacy to resources focused on helping people leave behind hate groups. People searching for these terms will be directed to Life After Hate, an organization founded by former violent extremists that provides crisis intervention, education, support groups and outreach.

I wonder if they can re-purpose this technology to re-direct people who post content critical of Facebook and social media to pro-Facebook propaganda.

In principle, who could be opposed? In practice, how will this actually work out? True story. I have a friend who got a temporary ban from Facebook (I think 90 days?) for commenting on a story about a Texas billionaire paying to hunt endangered animals, "How much would it cost to hunt Texas billionaires?" That was considered a violation of their anti-bullying stance. Knowing her, it wasn't. It was sarcasm. Moving on…

> That was considered a violation of their anti-bullying stance. Knowing her, it wasn't. It was sarcasm. That's what bullies usually say when you confront them.

A one off joke, or even mean remark, is not bullying.

How much would it cost to hunt [insert group of people here]? Even if someone commented that as "sarcasm" it would look pretty bully to me.

Nope. You misunderstand what bullying is. You can't bully an abstract group.

“Joking” about murder or gun violence should be banned. To use satire to critic hunting when gun violence is a bigger issue is tone deaf.

That's really a perfect time to use satire.

I suspect there is some value in pushing such content off of large sites to reduce the surface area available for recruitment. I used to think that pushing such content off a site or forum was futile and calling it for what it is on a site had value, I'm not sure that is the case anymore. If you look on platforms like reddit and such where you have groups in subreddits calling for race wars, general hatred, and viole…

I spend most of my time on Reddit, and you’re spot on here. Deplatforming is the most effective way to fight the spread of hate. It’s literally a cancer, and it’s goinf to take the chemo therapy of stepping on the toes of free speech to protect our country and society. Sucks, but that’s what it takes - especially when they wrap themselves up in the flag and hide behind the first amendment to spew their hate.

You are not forced to look at subreddits that offend you.

> hide behind the first amendment

I think people need to hide behind first amendment, you misunderstand what it is.

The way I see race actually agrees with you, but the issue is that "white nationalists" DO see themselves as a race and ethnicity:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_nationalism

It's in the first sentence of their description:

> White nationalism is a type of nationalism or pan-nationalism which espouses the belief that white people are a race and seeks to develop and maintain a white national identity.
