"Numerical Recipes in C" This was the first programming book that actually made me laugh at times. The writer's style is wry and very accessible. His strong opinions and commentary kept me glued. Admittedly I didn't read every word but IMHO this is one of the classics. Ditto for Sedgewick's "Algorithms" book.

I have chill running down my spine from thinking that someone read Numerical Recipes from cover to cover without putting it down. No offense - but it's an incredibly dense book. In particular the code samples take a lot of effort to really chew through, at least for me.

I treat Numerical Recipes like a bank robbery: get in and get out.

I look up the ONE solution I need, read the associated 2-3 pages, and put it away for another few months.

Michael Abrashes Graphics Programming Black book is one of the only ones I've read the whole thing (maybe not in order though). EDIT: The anecdotes in the book were entertaining, and the content interesting.

Absolutely. His Zen of Code Optimization is also a great book.

SICP seems to be really well written so far, but it's not the kind of book you're going to read in one sitting.

Microprocessors: A Programmers View (Computing That Works) : This is an older book and had fascinating explanations about how CISC (i386) processors worked and a comparison against RISC type processors and the implications for programmers. This book has fascinating historical info and if I recall correctly had a great amount of humor regarding the development of the various types of processors.
