This company has been following a really old-fashioned mentality for solving these kinds of problems! It sounds like they hired a daddy instead of someone who can contribute with creative solutions.

If youtube can determine when to delete a channel due to bad comments wouldn't they also be able to just delete the comments?

No, I am literally talking about the group of “incels” that are specifically engaging in hate speech. The people I am talking about here are outright promoting rape, violence and child abuse. Not indirectly. Not between the lines. Just straight up stating those kinds of things.

So did they ban comments as the headline indicates or just default disable them. Default disable seems much more reasonable to me, let creators decide if they want to moderate comments but keep them default off so family videos don't have to deal with that.

Well, no, so I wouldn't say that, but, OTOH, saying that might be problematic from an employment noon-discrimination standpoint. And there are other things Google might say that would be problematic from a standpoint of either consumer or securities fraud. Or libel. But none of that is germane to the point under discussion.

Of course not. One requires hypothetically only noticing something afterwards, and one actively nannying in real time.
"I can tell something bad happened here" is way easier.

Implying that Reddit comments are any less of a cesspool. Reddit hosts a lot of quality discussion from small niche communities but the same is true for YT. If anyone can figure out how to maintain quality discussion at the scale of thousands of speakers they'll be a billionaire overnight.
Comment voting has been the major solution thus far. Any scaled or NLP automated solution is just an arms race with bad actors.
And it's no solution.

I'd say the one down side to HN is the moderation and I don't think social media has any responsibility to moderate comments.
Readers of NN comments are free to ignore any content they wish to ignore.
I find the trend of individuals demanding organizations and governments protect them from content they may find distasteful or content they don't agree with to very disturbing.
