I’ve been on h1b for over 7 years now , with no chance of getting a green card because I was born in India , all my immigrant friends who started working at the same time have already gotten their green cards - they all have the option to quit their jobs if they feel like they are being underpaid or exploited. But not me , I’m looking at 70 years before I get my freedom , until then I have to tolerate the indentured…

> all my immigrant friends who started working the same time have already gotten their green cards Well it’s happening because US is trying to give equal chances to all countries, by giving them equal opportunity and quota, the fact that there are way more people from India who come to work here is the reason you wait longer than other nations, no?

Why do we care about countries rather than individuals?

Needs to be adjusted for cost of living, salary changes over time by profession (Tech salaries are in a bubble rn. which makes 150k reasonable by bay area standards, but they may go significantly up / down in the future) which is complicated enough but there's edge cases like Universities / Non profits etc. that can't pay salaries to compete with the private sector but people work there anyway because of passion.

I disagree, if you can find cheap programmers in Des Moines, Iowa, then by all means expand there, spread the love within the country before going for import labour. As for bubbles, that's the point, there shouldn't be any if labour is available and willing to come in.

Most IT / h1 roles are not based out of the Bay Area [1]. Significant amounts of H1b population goes to doing cookie cutter consulting projects spread across the country and setting a 150k min on the wage means that you won't be able to hire H1s at all in other parts of the country. Obviously this creates a lot of demand for American programmers and personal experience suggests that this will cause a labor shortage.

That might be better for the world. Maybe if everyone wasn’t moving to America, they’d make their own countries better... spread the love out. I’d be fine with a few less tech companies. Life would go on. I care more about the impact on American workers and as I’ve said, bringing in severely underpaid workers that they can abuse isn’t really going to help. Yeah, China is really somewhere people are desperate to get i…

I am not saying people from around the world are trying to get into china. People of chinese origin have already started to go back and people from china believe they are better in China then is US. They have kept their highest talent and have used them to compete with US in spaces in which US held monopoly for an extremely long time. If other countries get better, US's heigmony over the world will be challenged agai…

So not bringing over underpaid foreign workers makes us MORE colonial? Got it...

Some of us don’t care about US hegemony, which doesn’t really exist anyways... this is about labor. You’re just moving the goalposts to all this other non-sensical stuff.

Why is it not okay to discriminate on the basis of your skin color at birth but okay to discriminate on the basis of which side of a border you were born in? Surely, there would a lot of outrage in HN if someone said - "Granted that H1-Black visas should ostensibly be filled only for positions where it is difficult to find qualified whites"?

I suppose it depends on whether or not you consider it morally acceptable for a country to prioritize the prosperity of its own citizens over that of non-citizens. I.e., whom does a country's government serve?

Why is it morally acceptable for a country to prioritize the prosperity of its own citizens, but not for whites to prioritize the prosperity of fellow whites?

I don't know about the salaries, but let's keep in mind that Alibaba and Tencent are two of the biggest companies in the world.

Sure, but do the employees see any of that? Do Alibaba employees get generous equity grants? Vacation time? Cash bonuses? SV type salaries? I'm not doubting China has some great companies and things going on, it's just a very bold claim with seemingly no evidence behind it. It's the kind of claim I hate. "everyone knows" -> insert anecdote here

My previous colleges in Baidu and Alibaba in China are paid similarly as in US (6~8 years SWE). USD $200K~$300K is very common. The range is very broad though.

Also, Beijing is not a cheap place. Real estate prices are comparable to NYC.

Due to demand and supply, SWEs are among best paid jobs.,

The simple answer is that the US fought a war over the question of whether it can prioritize fellow whites and the pro side lost. Badly.

Because hope , because I believe in America.

+1 to the Europe comment. You can become a citizen in Ireland by working 5 years. Same for a couple more European countries atleast.

That may be true, but do you become Irish by working for 5 years? I know countries in Europe where even if you were born there, the native population will still consider you a foreigner. In the US, people will treat you as one of their own as soon as you step out of the airport.

Sort of like "it should not be possible to hire black workers into entry level positions at all"?

This is a very dumb straw man attack. Stop it.

How so? I claim that severe discrimination (like banning a group of people from entry level positions) based on circumstances of birth is ethically dubious. I think that's why we don't entertain the idea of banning people from entry level work because they were born to black parents. Why doesn't it generalize to being born to Indian parents?

Might makes right. Got it.

Edit : Sorry addicted, I interpreted your comment as a justification, not as historical account. My bad.
